Default Tall thin spotty gum removal rigged down knotless videod with helcam

Another developer special, these trees are left behind, ex forest remnants. They are usually tall and thin coz they were once competing for sunlight and supported by their nearby mates who had grafted roots and bad weather shelter.

Got bit of a ride up top, tried to hook saw up but just dumped it opting for the pole grab.

3.30 mins and 16mb WMV

Nice one Ekka, if those are the same guys on the ground from the other knotless vid they've picked up on their control skills greatly
Had to smile when I saw you dump the saw to hang on... man I've done that a few too many times myself.

Yeah, I said I'll do things a little different to the last guy and explained what I'm about ... they just went with the flow and enjoyed it.

We all develop our own style and uniqueness as climbers or tree workers. Me, I dislike mess. I like things organised and prepared.

Like a surgeon I'll have slings laid out in order, blocks, biners, saws etc all ready to go. If I need something I'll call it up, including drinks. I like the drop zone relatively clear, ropes tidy etc. And these guys responded to that very well. In fact I commend them on their preparation.

Before that job we had a little fence-line prune job (neighbours fighting over trees yet again), I look and then lay out the gear I'll need, get my high point and call the gear up as required. I think they like it like that, I dont think they're used to it and everything goes smooth.

Good to see they are learning something, bettering themselves. As bad as it is what happened to Russell, he needed to learn something about safety too, and hopefully if/when he comes back he has. And now with it creating this opportunity for you to climb with his ground guys, they might learn some habits from you that will save one of their lives.

You would have snatched that with ya rig would you?

How do you go measuring out as the crow flies when you are bidding ... you pretty used to distances and just look and know you'll get it with 4 picks etc or do you have some laser sighted gizmo that you just aim at the tree and get the distance?

Picking the sound track takes me ages, you get a sort of idea what you want and end up trying a few things ... before you know it hours have passed.

Also, on the radio lately there's this trend of playing 5 or so songs in a row and you don't always here the titles and artists, make it hard to know what you just heard.

Let it run!!!

Nice vid.

How come you didn't lower the rest of the tree in sections, letting them run?

Coz it takes too long, you have to move all ya block and crap and root around might as well just block it out and by the time I step outta the tree the groundies have claened the joint up.

Also, the blocks had to be carried out anyway so saves the ground guys more sawing.

No biggie really.

Be aware that when you lift these pieces you are compressing your spine then twisting to throw into the target area. I suspect you are aware of this as the pieces were small, occasionally I find when I'm rushing I have a bad habit of taking too large a piece and struggling with it.

I am always amazed when I am back on the ground trying to lift the pieces I threw down, only to find they weigh nearly twice as much as they did in the tree! Must be adrenaline or something that gives you the extra strength.

When there are targets that could be damaged I try to rig down the whole stem as much as possible, I find it quicker as I can take one piece which would be the same as 4 or five smaller pieces.

Depends on the tree really, if I can do step cuts or notches and just push the sections off I will.

Your ground guys did well controlling the rope through portawrap.

How long did you have to train them to let the pieces run properly?

Good point on the spine, I usually have a bombing zone and just push them off, where lifting is required I better take it easy next time.

All that adrenelin gets you pumped, and I know what you mean when you get on the ground.

That was the chipper guy, didn't really have to train him ... he knew, he was good.

I really liked your video Ekka, it was put together really well, I am wondering do you ever use a whoopi sling? By the way where did you get your helmut camera?

If your bull rope was not spliced. what kind of knot would you use on your carabiner ?

Through trial and error I have found the buntline hitch one of the best termination knots for rigging with biners.

No hitch or knot beats a splice in strength.

The tree world commercial is outstanding ! I showed it to my wife (who hates tree work )
and even she thought it was great. If you keep it up , you'll be making all the big money doing vid editing and web design. Soon you'll forget all about tree work ! LOL

LOL

Some how, I doubt it.

But a little of the web stuff etc is good and those skills help for reports too.
