Default My new Hobbs H2 lowering device

I can’t say enough about this device since finally making the purchase a few weeks ago…..nor do I have time to at the moment
YouTube - TreeWork / Hobbs Lowering Device

Not really looking to start yet another Hobbs v the equally superb GRCS debate…..

For the record, I’m satisfied I made the right decision in choosing the Hobbs to suit my personal circumstances and preferences……and despite my initial reservations, cost didn’t influence the decision at all. However, that is all they are, MY circumstances and preferences.

Some nice rigging shots in the video, although the youtube quality ruins it somewhat. It might even be an idea to turn up your speaker volume so you can hear the device working for those clips where it’s difficult to see what’s happening.

Very nice video and some very nice rigging. I'm gonna refer it to my mate who wants to buy the hobbs device. I've got the GRCS myself...

Reg,
Very nice video mate, thanks for posting.
Looks like you've got the ground crew trained well on the Hobbs.
Great camera shots!!!

Great work once again, love the camera footage you get, definately unique

Nice rigging, all looked as smooth as possible - and good stuff to your ground crew(s), nice colmanation.

On one of the section lowering bits towards the end, I think I saw you had two half hitches then a timber... But when it fell over, did one of the half hitches slip off? Looked like alot of weird spiral motions when it went down, that's all.

I've never used either of these devices, but can I ask you of your personal preferences as to why you chose the hobbs and what you didn't like about the GRCS?

Great video as usual. Love the sound of fibers popping.

One piece was real close to roof. Always lets you know that is the last one or you better tag line or chunk or get a crane in or drop stick (or something else).

I ve never bought a ratcheting friction device bcs I get hyper when I want to bomb one out, no way I m going to wait to remove machine, drop piece, then put back on.
I would eventually crash device and prob big number to rebuild.

Love the part where you re talking to the piece while trying to get it to fold over . I do that all the time too. My words are less video friendly tho as I m sure yours are too when not for public viewing .

Very VERY professional Reg, and yes we rarely show the things that don't look professional but the atmosphere and actions of the ground crew speaks volumes about the level of skill and mutual understanding going on there....brilliant stuff...PS you should offer that one as an advert for Hobbs

Great, took a while for me to get to watch it as YouTube was in some maintenance mode.

Great shots.

What the heck sort of tree was that?

I'm guessing Poplar, but probably wrong whatever it was cut like a Spathodea really soft.

Thanks

JohnDee, the hitch was fine (I assume you mean the one near the shed), but it was an odd shape, came off at 90 degrees from the pulley so it twisted a little, gavin let it run just enough which kind off exagerates how it appears on video. Why the Hobbs, well various reasons, obviously design features, a little too much to write just now if thats ok.

Treevet, we actually managed to rig another 5 after the one with the shed but managed to push them more towards the camera position to avoid them swinging around as that particular one did. Also, what you cant see is a deep trench directly infront of the tree, and to the right was a steep landscaped garded for 100 yards. I couldn't drop anything until I got to about 10 ft and even then we had to build up up log barriers to stop the chunks either rolling off down the hill or otherwise bouncing into the shed. Not to mention it took two days to rig the top down, that shed was real hinderance, start to finish.

Sean they were all different guys/companies on those 4 jobs using the hobbs....all first time users which speaks volumes I think.

Eric, the big conifer was a cedar followed by lombardi poplars and a couple of sycamore maples at the end

I actually meant the first block you took after the blocking title came up, about 7:22, but on another siting of your video, I mis-counted your half hitches there was only one, then the timber hitch.

That's fine mate, another time .

Love the timber hitch. It gets a lot of bad, undeserved press.

Kimtree, that was a 20 mm rope, the heaviest chunk about 500kg

John, that hitch was fine. It did swing under and miss the trunk but everything was good.
