Well, I think it took around 3 hours. But ...

It was the first time the groundy used a lowering device.

It was the second groundy's 2nd day.

There was a lot of communication and learning going on ... like letting it run, DOWN NOW (and I near got clobbered seen in the video), the lowering rope got a knot in it that got stuck whilst the section was up in the air, flicking the rope back up ETC ETC ... in other words a lot of BS was going on.

Also what a climber misses out on is some feedback, clearances, slews, loads etc so you also are more mentally drained coz you are thinking for 3 with little guidance from the ground. Also set up is all up to you, from what slings, pulleys, ropes etc ... where as a pro groundy would look at the tree and know what gear to get out.

So, tree down 3 hours in my circumstances, normally I would have put 2 on it but not this crew. Good ground guys can make or break you mentally, besides the physical part of the job you have to think defensively for poor lowering and stuff ups, like your life line twisted into the lowering rope but no-one says anything and you cant see it coz it's round the other side of the trunk.

Your lifeline is tangled onto a fence and stuck, you cannot move!

Your ropes are in the log bombing zone but no-one cares!

Yes, these are all the things edited out.

Yeah, I have those problems too. Rope tangled up in the drop zone. Not releasing the load quick enough, so you end up getting hit. Worst 1 I had was a newbie stopped the load dead and the butt came back and hit my hand whilst holding onto the trunk. Just a few choice words normally makes them remember. Knots are an ongoing issue for some, there is only 3 they need to remember really. Figure 8, running Bowline, and Marline spike. But the new lad is getting there.

HA, gotcha ya, that was a cow hitch not a cow knot. lol

I have a wide range of endless loops, even a couple of NickfromWI ones, I just use them. We can buy loopies here, but they're expensive so I just use loops. I use a really big loop to cow hitch the block on, man I got loops thats go from 1m to 5m long ... I got it all covered with endless loops. And love them.

Hey, those flat tapes can be OK too but rope has weight to it which you can flick out.

Awesome video Ekka,

Saw a couple of techniques I'd like to apply.
Keep the long ones comin! They're so much more satisfying than those little ones that last 20 seconds.

Ekka,nice
You are dead right Ekka, groundies can make or break you up in a big tree. You can be really mentally and physically drained after a big climb.I have been in a tree for 5 hours one day had lunch up there too, to big to came back down.. slept well that night tell you.A GRCS would have been handy for that job.....Keep up the good work

Most enjoyable Eric, pretty tight spot that one.

What is you're helmet-camera setup? It looks as if its mounted on the centre of the helmet rather than to the side. Is it a wireless-independant unit or a recorder with a seperate plug-in lens, if so where/how do you carry the recorder?

thanks

nice video I use that technique myself including for speed lines with branches but i had a problem a loop melted from the muffler on my chain saw. i now carry a pouch for the loops instead of hanging off my harness. and bought rope with higher melting point.

Hello Ekka and the crew here,
Great videos, I think I've found one of the best sites on the net.
Really good watching your video and reading the chat.

Howdy Simon

It's about sharing and showing, most days it feels like just another typical job ... then you video it etc, put it up and people like it. Different techniques perhaps, equipment, scenery whatever, if you have the chance to do that yourself go right ahead.
