Default Jim1NZ downunder video, casuarina TD

Brother Colin on the video camera, Jim up the tree, me on the ropes.

We cut down a quad leadered Casuarina in a tight spot and also 3 palms.

7.30mins long and 38mb WMV

Pretty good job and all went smooth. Jim's in the orange top.

That was Jim, you never get to see Colin.

Instead of wings cuts we opted for the notch out as the saw only had a 18" bar and that way you'd get a back cut in with one swoop.

That top Jim bombed off had a fair fall in it and I had a house roof and fence to clear, good roping means watching the tip of that brush ... giving slight resistance to turn it so tips are down then judging the swing and maxing out the run till you just miss everything ............

.......... that's as smooth as she'll ride. Now with a GRCS I would have pulled that slack in on the way down and been able to get it even smoother. On the log we lowered with the GRCS I would have winched it off.

But it does show how smooth the porty can be if the operator knows what he is doing, if the operator doesn't hang on and hold stuff up, doesn't over wrap and wears gloves so heat from letting things run doesn't bother your hands.

On sections that need to run I ensure there's plenty of free rope behind me to slip through my hands. Also, between the porty and I, I have slack, the lowering rope hanging almost to the ground so I know the first say 1m will have no resistance from me just the device.

See diagram, also, dont stand under the load or in swing path of the load ... treat each load as if were to break what would happen. No need for struck by's or flat foot in this job.

Good info on lowering technique, but if you dont mind I'd like to add two more small things that are only small but important.

1/ Tie a stopper knot in the end of your lowering rope.
This will give you enough time to deal with what your lowering before you let the rope run thru your hands.

2/Rake the area where your rope is layed out so you can run it smothly.
This will save any twigs comeing up with the rope prematurely braking the load.

Like the raking idea Jay, rope tarp would also achieve the same thing.

Good video, Colin knew when to zoom in for the details then pan out for the action, lots of different angles too.

Smoooth rigging Ekka, love it. Best groundies are usually other climbers, pure groundies that have it totally sussed a few and far between.

Nice climbing by JimNZ too.

My 18" clogs alot on palms but that seemed to eat it up.

Ekka, what sorta $$$ was your grapple?

Around $2K USA, It's a BMG by TNT, bloody ripper mate.

Jim loves it, he gets to stand there and just help stuff a few things between the rollers rather than hump.

That 18" is the 170hp engine I think, biggest engine.

Great Video Ekka, Jim and Colin.

Dam your kanga makes it look so easy Ekka. Lol, I noticed on that first palm, when you were bombing the top out, that Jim fell over when he was pulling the line - it's at 5 mins 11 secs.

We had a job recently where the Casuarina had 5 leaders, there was 3 cocos palms too.. Scary :P Maybe it's great Arborists work alike? Haha.

What kind of notching were you fellas doing on the trunk, when you cut the sides? I've never seen that. Whats the purpose? Great work though. I cant wait to get a ground man to do the lowering for me.

LOL

Look in the videos section and a member called brainfart put up a German video where they are using that technique, no pun intended but they call it the box cut.

Over here we call it the bar was not long enough relief cut.

As Jim was up against a fence a standard felling bore in and go round for a shorter bar wasn't going to happen, easiest way was to take off the sides so the bar was long enough for the fell. I also done this on some bottle bottomed palms coz they get a bulge, neat trick, keep it in mind next time you may have the need for it.

Eric the only bad thing I saw was the kanga tipping forward. Not eating enough lately?
Really though nice work and video.
