Default Felling a split side leaning 100' gum tree

Sort of made my day getting told to fell this last thing in the afternoon.

Love a challenge, we had a brand new 46 with 20" bar, had to make do as the tree was a lot wider than that but it's never bothered me either.

Did you measure the tree after you felled it Eric? I'd have thought more like 75 after seeing it on film and judging by how long it took to land....I might be way off though, wouldn't be the first time!

Anyway, a good film and well executed strategy....and what a beautiful enviroment to work in

I guess saving this poor bast*** was out of the question??? LOL. I had to cut out a top like that off of spurs at about 60'.The tree had 2 other good leads at split and customer wanted to save tree. It was an big old pin oak damaged from this years hurricane winds. The lead was 20'' in diameter ,and it was a splintered mess. The fear factor kicked in a couple times as I doubted my calculations. My "escape route" was limited to literally no-where. Good job Eric , and thanks for sharing. I gotta figure out how to post videos on here

For me the spilt back cut (the cutting technique used here) is the safest method of felling there is, of course there are specific structural problems in trees to be felled that would demand the use of another technique.

It should also be noted that the final part of the back cut should leave the faller on the side leading into their escape route (physical limitations on site permitting)

I wasn't wandering around the smelly bog to measure it. But it was easy over 75'

Eucs suck people in because they're rather tall for the dia.

There are perhaps only a handful of 200ft trees in the whole of the UK Rog.

I just think people have a tendency to over-estimate a trees height.

Hey, its not a put-down on Eric or anything, who did an excellent job with a dangerous tree, regardless of height or girth.

But getting a sense of scale from the appearance of the ropes and where they were attached....also the time it took for the tree to land, then I just don’t see 100 ft in that tree.

Now go back with your measuring tape Eric, take your camera

Reg, you saw the thread of us taking that hemlock off the snowy roof? Both Mike And I guessed the tree was about 100.....Turned out to be 125..... and abt 17" dbh.

Eric's euc looks to be 100' on the video, with that large trunk, it could be easily that tall.

Just watched it twice more, I'm not buying it!

I think I have some video of straight-falling some pines last year. Paced them out after to find they were all under a hundred, but still looked way taller than that Euc from all angles. If I can find the footage I'll post tomorrow.

Hah....I'm not selling it.....

but I measured the top with a log tape, and know that the measurement on the rest was within 3 feet.

Well, if I get a chance I'll return to the bog and try to measure it.

Hey if you can Eric that'd be something The time it takes to fold and hit the ground just seems a little too fast for it to be 100.
