Default Council Grove Kansas "Post Office" Bur Oak Removed

Rooted in history, aging tree cut down
Bur oak was used as mail repository by Santa Fe Trail travelers

This single tree played a starring role the great westward migration of the early 1800's.

The page even has a video of the removal.

Hey FlashD were you on this job? Looks like there was quite an audience.

Wasn't much of a tree, just a stump.

Likely didn't help building around it like that years ago, not that people would have known then. Also looked like it had been filled up around the trunk.

Time for it to go I suppose.

I like the fact they are going to retain the preserved stump (maybe) for kids to put letters into etc... they should be able to get some govt funding from the ed dept, or similar I would have thought.

Totally agree the building probably did for it in the end...

sorry I'm late.
I wasn't there. Charly went and did it all by his lonesome while we did some other jobs here in Manhattan. I wish I could have been there, but he does all the fun stuff himself.

Dang that ole Charly, eh?!!

Because of his slow fanny, I barely got off the ground on Gerry Beranek's Tree House Project. First, I climbed a 150 footer for photos, then came down and did ground work. Next, I was ready to go up in the 12 foot redwood just adjacent to the biggie, for photos, and to maybe ride the transfer line into the big fella, which is over 3 feet around at 250 feet where its top broke many years ago. Each day, there was 3 pairs of climbers working the tree, one to support the rigger and cutter, running ropes and the like. It took Charley a good half and hour to get into his saddle, rig his ascenders and start up the tree...Prolly another half and hour to get up. After that, I was super busy helping do the ground rigging for the third speedline/control line that we set.

Charly's known Ger for well over 20 years. He photographed Ger's famous poster, "150 feet up and still 7 feet in diameter" where he's shown topping a giant.

All told, counting climb lines for those of us who climbed other trees for photos, there was 7000 feet of line in use!!!! For those of you who don't know the story, it is prolly the largest tree ever to be pruned. It's part of a curio shop, and had many long dead branches, which were remove, and all long branches shortened. 90%of the work was sped lining or highlining to a lowering point between it and another tree. 20 arborists took part in the 3day project. Snow and rain derailed it getting done. A smaller local crew finished later that 2003 spring.

For those of you who haven't been to Ger's website, there's that video, and a slew of others, plus his books, for sale A Tree Story: books and videos by Gerald F Beranek

Yeah, I work for Wildcat Tree Service and Charly's International. It's amazing to me how many people know Charly sometimes.
