Default Cable Crossing Columbia vs hike

Oldtimer sent me this video, outstanding.

Although not pertaining specifically to trees it does show a darned good cable ride that a village uses in remote Columbia to cross a gorge.

They use pretty rugged braking system.

Well worth a look.

3.44mins and 8mb WMV

Hi All,
They say ignorance is bliss,If you are raised to do this every day it would as normal as catching the bus,I feel for the younger sister traveling in the thread bear sack..definately ignorant of the danger.Would I use it? I would definately have to check it out first....maybe? Would you..be truthfull.

Does anyone know if there are two cables like this in different areas?

I saw something like this - almost exactly - on something like the History Channel or Discovery Channel about 2 to 3 months ago.

But I don't think it's the same exact video.

At first I thought the post was referring to the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, but noticed that it was a gorge in Columbia.

Would they need two cables to make the work? One angled each way?

Or would they raise one side and lower the other somehow?

This beats taking the bus anyday!!! Hell yeah I'd ride this... But backed up with a few other pulleys perhaps. I think they mention in the film that there are two cables with the angle down for direction. Can't see if the cable is steel, but if it is, and it is anchored correctly, there's not much danger in that.

Maybe unicef can get some money to buy those children harnesses.

Yeah there were 2 seperate cables both with obvious high/low points somehow.

Looked like steel to me, and decent sized.

That would be one heck of a ride, a steel cable with a cast pulley. I was a bit suprised that the cable wasn't non-twist type. I am also curious as to how the pulley and pin were put together. Were there bearings in it or brass or maybe just steel on steel. Seems like the last choice would create a lot of heat.

I don't know in UNICEF even knows those people exist, a better idea might be for the US DEA to send some money back to the place that is corrupting the young minds of Americans. (Illegal drug seisures) Kinda like the parabol "give them a fish or teach them how to fish".

Even when the ride is over there looks to be a healthy walk for them.

On a lighter note, I was wondering what the DOT, ANSI and Tom Dunlop would consider SOP for the users of the device?

We did something similar in the Army at Fort Jackson. Just a cable running down a steep hill, not over a gorge. No brake system though, you just plowed into a big pile of sand.
