| http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCCDcN4DRbg This was a storm damaged tree. 1/2 took out the wires and hit the neighbors house. Neighbors didnt get along so I got this after the wires were back up. Leaned heavy toward the wires still. |

| Very good vid, we're not allowed to work from the jib of a crane like that, OH&S won't allow it, so I've never done that.(What are the regs for you using that technique?) But I have worked with cranes and big timber from in the tree. Only thing that worried me was when you got into cutting the stem the first chunk with canopy came very close to both you and your lines No room for a tag line? or would that have run too close to the power lines?Steve and I had to remove a very big raintree from an island resort a while ago with a 80T crane very tight spot using tag lines to avoid putting 3ton sections through the bar and resturant. (Was only the 2 of us so no photos sadly) |

| A tag line would have worked. The crane op. was on his cell and not paying attention. The 2nd to last pic he actually moved toward the wires. I am tied into a cambium save through a shackle on top of the downhall weight. |

| It's really interesting the way different work practices from other parts of the world influence how a job progresses. We wouldn't be able to get the larger cranes up here without a dogman supplied by the crane company, esp when they know you're going to be moving big chunks of timber. I've even seen video of an arb guy US with a type of crane that he controls fom the tree (I think that was youtube) SF |

| Not being able to ride the hook/ball is a real bugger in this job. I know in NZ they can ride it too. Boa, we gotta get our doggers tickets. ![]()

| Found the link for that climber controlling crane vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mcAqqVMHSo not all that sure if I'd be keen to be the climber in this sort of situation I have enough to do concentrating on my ropes and the rigging wouldn't want to add driving the crane as well! |

| That's Allmark's mate Mike Poor, another crane nutter, I think they do jobs together or something. I suppose when cranes are so much cheaper than here and you can ride the hook then hell yeah, more the merrier. Some-one had a boom failure recently, Mark should know the story.

| I got my rigging and dogmans ticket a few years back, first 2 days were dogman part adding up/basic maths weights etc,a fair amount propably 20%of the guys didnt get thru that part so couldnt continue course. Some of the rigging prac was good to learn, one good thing if i ever hire in a crane i dont have to pay for a dogman. |

| What is a dogman? Is he the person doing the calculations or is he the "rigger" as we would call it. The amazing thing in my state of NY(each varies the rules)I need a crane certification to operate my crane. Yhe crane in the second video Boa posted I would not even though it is taller and has more lift capacity...The difference is mine has a winch line. | I'm guessing that the certification for the crane itself would vary from state to state too. I've not seen any cranes like those over here. How often does your crane have to be inspected and recertified? SF |

| Thanks thats what I thought. bOA:It varies state by state but they are trying to make ti fedral. It needs to be inspected annually by an outside certified inspector. Regularly and documented in house. |

| That second crane was like an oversized HIAB moreso than a genuine crane. I have no idea what the rules are on HIAB style cranes, but that one of Mike's has what lifting capacity?
