Thanks for the invite to join in your web-site. I have established a log-in some time ago but haven't been back since June -- Thats my bad! Anyway I am taken back by the high level of information that is on this site. I have several of Shigo's books and struggle to make sense of them. I am getting better and this site helps. My love for trees goes back to my childhood; I would hit the woods in the morning and only return at night, playing my heart out ---climbing trees and building forts. I started to climb trees 14 years ago as a recreational tree climber. My buddy (Abe Winters) and I now teach and conduct recreational treeclimbing South of Atlanta Georgia in the U.S.A. We have had a wonderful run now for over 12 years, climbing with over 12,000 people. Our web-site is "treeclimbingusa.com" Please free feel to visit our site and leave us a message and if your ever in this part of the world please contact us. Thanks again for such a wonderful site. The Title?: It started to rain in Georgia several days ago after more than four months of dry, hot, humid weather. Several days around 100 degrees --- for us with the humidity its murder. Welcome all ![]() ![]() We have some great people on this site, all with the common goal of caring for trees and working on them. I enjoy seeing trees and tree work from other countries, so dont be shy showing what you get up to. For those who are qualified we have a hidden area where more sensative issues and chat amongst fellow arborists can occur without the general public or bots viewing it, sort of our recluse. There are some requirements, get your post count up so we get to know you and what you are all about. Perhaps showcase some of your jobs etc. Enjoy, and I look forward to reading you.

G'Day all, I'm an independant, part time tree guy. Have been climbing for 24 yrs, Love the work, almost wanted to quit my other job. Can't be doing that though. I take vacation so I can cut/trim tree's. The wife thinks I'm sick. Really enjoy the site. Thanks, Mike. |

Thanks for the welcome, Ekka. I'd like to say that you have a wonderful site here. For now, I'll stick to caring for my own trees; there's plenty of work to go around here. I looked at a course in Urban Arboriculture at Humber College and for some reason they require you to be strong in math, which I'm not, so I don't know if I would get in. Got a few other things I need to do anyway, so at most for now it's just an interest/hobby. Cheers, wishing you all the best. |

I could only see them wanting some math for the rope force calculations, no big deal really, if you know how much change to get from your grocery bill then you'll be OK. Dont forget the ISA have cert arb over there, you buy a study guide, then sit a test. Maybe take some pics out your way, see what it's like. I got a dead gum tree to climb/cut today, errr, hate dead trees!

Thanks for the welcome. At the age of 76 I am still trying to catch up to what is new and useful in fixing up this planet. The desert is approaching fast and I have been planting an oasis before it reaches here. Looking forward to seeing your collective experiences. Bakary Jatta, Bwiam village, The Gambia |

A warm welcome for you traveller. ![]() I'd really like to see pics if you can of your area, not many on here from Africa! The desert is approaching and encroaching in Australia to, and the removal of native bush continues. ![]() Seems people think that wildlife only exists in parks and zoos and not the "real world" anymore. They step out of their airconditioned home into their airconditioned car, drive to the airconditioned office, 90% do not work physically and get paid a fortune for lip or keyboard service and then go home in a reverse procedure wondering what is wrong with all the "greenies" saying the planet is in bad shape. ![]() About the only perspective they have is what they watch on TV. Keep planting, drought tolerant natives are the go here.

Welcome Bakary, I couldn't agree with Ekka more (althogh there are a lot of people who work in offices (myself included) who are doing stuff to help with the ongoing problem of vegetation clearance. The problem here is compounded by developers having so much cash that they are pretty much immune to fines. They just clear the land, pay the fines, build the new luxury development, make a fortune and move on. They may landscape the development, but pay very little (or no) heed to the mature trees (and therefore habitat and amenity) that continue to be lost. Anyway, great to hear from someone in The Gambia. All I know about it is that a lot of rich Brits go there for their holidays every year. Maybe they are a source of finance (approached in the right way)? Good luck and keep planting. |

Welcome Bakary, I spent two very pleasant weeks in the Gambia and Senegal in 84', don't really remember much detail except the great generosity and kindness of all the people (no exceptions) that I met there. Spent most of my time on the North shore and in Senegal, but vaguely remember something about a big kettle or pot in Bwaim, (maybe you can tell us more?) can't honestly say I remember going there or seeing it but I may have. (Too many refreshments in that time )Although even then 80's the desert was an increasing problem I do remember some quite impressive mangroves and very hungry horse flies!!! ![]() Have you been planting fruit trees or native plants? |
