Default New in the forest

Hello there,
At the moment we live on a boat in the river Amstel in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, but we will buy this barge in a few year to move to Portugal. We have an old farm in the Algarve, Portugal and it will be renovated soon. On the 10Ha ground we have one palm-tree end a lot of cork-oaks, oranges, prunes, granadines and other fruit trees that I didn't identify yet.
As a city-family we will have to overcome a lot of new problems concerning the trees. It is for this, that I like to join this forum.
Thank you, Swanray

Good on you and Welcome.

You live on the river, I wonder what that would be like? You have internet, maybe wireless or are you berthed somewhere with facilites?

Fruit trees are great, I miss the fruit trees here. People pay so much more attention to their trees when they're fruit trees.

Lots of good tips here and I'm sure with your enthusiasm and curiosity the trees will reward plenty. The easy part is water, if you have that it's most your troubles solved, we have drought here, very dry conditions and trees (some) are struggling.

Anyway, dont be shy, ask questions and feel at home.

Do you have any pictures of the river you are on, that would be nice.

Default River, Palm

I'll try to upload some pictures.
1 The river Amstel, Amsterdam, plenty of water.
2 The palm in front of our house in Portugal. What breed is it?

I lived on my (now moored) ship for over 30 years and I loved it, but want to spend the third part of my life in the Algarve, Portugal. We have all facilities here, so we are a floating house now, but the engine is still running. The size is 36 meters long and 6.10 meters wide, more than we will have in Portugal! Living here on the main river in Amsterdam on a boat this size is absolutely marvelous, no neighbours, yet in the centre of the city, own private mooring for the second or third little boat and a flat barge of 16 meters to 4.5 meters as a terrace makes it a unique place to be. Disadvantage: maintenance. There is always a lot of painting to do.

Welcome swanray:
It's a Canary Island Date. Here in Florida, we can get up to $250.00 to prune the tall ones. The thorns are a big hazard!

Graeme is a very good friend and we have worked together before, he is the king in trees. We have a big job coming up soon where Graeme will be lending us a hand so we can finish it in a day.I have some pictures at Ace Tree Management - Dangerous Tree Specialist check it out.

I have no picture on my computer, but will send one, once I take a picture. For that I have to go to the other side of the river.....by boat?
Thank you for the palm-identification. Yes, the thorns are horrible, I saw a bird spiked on one of them, dead of course.
How shall I treat the palm? Here in the Algarve they cut the leave as soon as it starts to hang down a bit. The lower part of the palm is often like a giant pine-appel and so is the top in a reverse way. In between, the stem is slim.
How do I cut the leaves of my palm?

Swanray

This thread has some pics it in. Have a look thru.

The idea is dont cut inward toward the trunk too much.

As the palm grows that fat trunk will be required so think of it as a Silo.

How comes that I do not see an "pine-appel" base?
Is This done afterwards?

Default Home Owner Who likes to Climb

Just wanted to say hello and thanks for all the great instructional video you provide. I have taken up tree climbing and use many of your techniques.

I'm sorry I didn't video tape the 100' tree I took down because it's just a memory now. But since it took me days to take down by myself it just wasn't possible. I could video tape the "by hand, log splitting into firewood" sessions which are ongoing. There is some technique to that too.

How about some maintainence/equipment tips including chain sharpening? I'm sure there are many hours spent on the gear.

Keep on filming!

Regards,
Dave

Thanks guys and good to see you here.

Yes, the sites free for all to use, some advertising options have come up as I try to phase a set of Google ads out, but that doesn't really change or affect anything.

I'm like most of you blokes, do tree work, have a small business and the same headaches as most.

Have fun and enjoy the site, dont be shy posting it's no big deal really.

John, sounds like a great gig.

How do you go with the real early daylight saving starts? Some golfers foaming at the mouth for a 5am tee off! Up here anyway as no daylight saving.

Watch out for those crazy hooks and slices .... I've had some come off the club at near 90 degrees and smash into the carts windshield, lucky it was plastic.
