Default Ice Axe usage

Oh, I don't intend to use these axes while cutting, think of them as ascenders. I also have a rather large (10 k.) cable spool with centrifugal brake that needs to be positioned high in the tree as a retracting lifeline.

My intentions are to use the axes to set the lifeline, then revert to the climbing belt for the actual work in the tree.

Aerial first off welcome and second you mentioned you think those are easier than gaffs,do you mean becasue gaffs put pressure on your arches and depending on the pad your shin?do you have tree gaffs or maybe you got pole gaffs by mistake in which case it is hard to climb anything but palms with.

No, they are used in conjunction with gaffs, hand gaffs so to speak. My first tree was with Lineman's spikes and it was scary. I bought some Bashlin Aluminum gaffs with tree spikes and it's much better. Way more comfortable with Buckingham velcro wraps. I've got great gaffs.

The easier part is bypassing limbs and forks, instead of unclipping and clipping up over them again with the climbing strap.

alot of climbers use 2 flipline or a flip line and climb line tied with a running bowline while climbing so that they are always attached to the tree, this video shows that,

Default Im New!

hey guys

some might have seen me on other forums over the last err, however long ive been on there going by this username or Jim.Lidgett on one or two.

what can I say, I'm recently turned 21, about to finish a BA(hons) degree in Music Production in Leeds which has been a waste of time and effort. if only I had had 20/20 hindsight on my side I would have taken a different route, but here I am.

Been working as a groundie for 3 years for different companies trying to get myself the most rounded experience of different work methods and ethics that I can. Been putting myself through my NPTC saw tickets and my most recent development being that Jim has finally left the ground!

after much deliberation I finally went with a 120 foot length of Yale XTC-12 which I find fantastic to handle, and use it with a blakes on a split tail climbing DRT and currently have on order some 6mm cord and a petzl micropulley to streamline my setup as per one of Ekka's own videos.

I'll be spending a lot of cash on gear soon, so i'll be looking at harness reviews (no more climbing in my sport harness) such as the butterfly 2 or the kolibri probably. and bothering you all for pointers as I progress with my climbing.

so there we have it. Hope this finds you all well, and I hope that I can be of some use around here soon.

Jim

heres me descending out of my mate's massive golden weeping willow yesterday on perhaps my 3rd or 4th climb

yes i know i know, where's the helmet

Hey Jim, welcome.

Music production, you could be rich and famous! No?

I bet after 3 years ground work you'll be glad to get in a tree. I wouldn't have hacked 3 years of dragging and humping, bugger that. My favourite jobs are "get them down and leave them" ... now that is great fun.

Pleased I realised when I did that trees were my thing, shame I didnt realise it before I went to Uni but you cant have it all can ya.

Hi Aerial, Jim,
Welcome to treeworldJim never look back,There is not a person on this board that couldn't do with a dose of hindsite..We all learn as we travel throught life.
Aerial thats a big tree your cuddling,A good place to start seeing how we go about climbing the safest way firstly is now under your nose..in our video section,Then I would recomend to you to buy the Tree climber's companion, There's a lot of great infomation to be learnt there.Leave those ice picks to the ice.
This saying should ring in your mind while your becoming a proficient climber, Low&Slow and always be attached to the tree,I would also suggest you become proficient with a chainsaw on the ground first before climbing and cutting aloft, simply use a hand saw untill you find your balance up there, As the chainsaw excerts other forces on you similier to somone gently pushing you off balance up there, sometimes worse. Simply put not many get a second chance aloft using a saw.Good luck to both of you and welcome.

Let me get this straight. You will free climb with foot spikes and an ice ax in both hands to go up and set your lifeline?

Well I plan to be on belay with a traditional rope as I climb with the gaffs and axes to place my DB SALA retractable stainless steel lifeline as shown in the photo at the top of the page.

Is this type of fall arrest system in used much in tree climbing? I used it on both the trees I have dropped so far, and it allows free movement in the tree while cutting limbs.

How do you descend on that thing?

Personally, I use my lifeline as a positioning system, have weight on it when cutting.
