Default Tough time for trees Re: Welcome .....

Hi to all tree fans,
Looking forward to some help and advice.
I live in the Snowy Mountains Australia, not the top but at 1000 metres. The conditions are tough for trees here. Frost, snow and ice in winter. Temps reach high 30s in summer and it's as dry as hell at times. (Closer to the sun)And the 'soil' is decomposed granite!
And it can be very windy!
Looking for shade in summer and light in winter.

Any tips?
Cheers Paul

How big/size. What situation (garden or property, feature tree, screen ???)

My bro who lives at Tumut planted a in a Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip Tree) probably about 8 years ago ... suits <-10oC. Probably will grow to about 30m (max) tall, with a conical crown not much more than 5-6m across, with a single trunk.

This is the tree ... pic taken in November in flower.

With the granitic soil, dig in plenty of compost dug about 6 months before planting. Personally, I would'nt plant straight in unconditioned /unimproved granite soil.

OR maybe the Chinese Pistachio (Pistacia chinensis ) ...it is much smaller growing (max 15m).
It doesnt seem to mind granite soils either ... has lovely autumn red colour ... and attractive berries ... I have seen good performance at Adelong where the soils are really grainy ... and its pretty cold there too (sleet/snow in cold winters). See link for images

Google Image Result for http://www.winterhill.com.au/verve/_resources/pistau_page_image.jpg

Or go nuts with the cold loving species like Zelkova serrata or Fagus sylvatica.

Ekka has asked me, on several occasions, to say hello to all of you. Hi! I do a bit of climbing, but like my handle says, it's on a part time basis. I'm one of the guys in a pickup with a ladder. Ya, I know, Hack. Nope, wrong. At 62yrs old that ladder saves me a lot of energy. I very seldom work off the ladder, but surely will if it the safest way for me. Seems to me there is a time and place for most methods. That being said, I would like to thank most of you for contributing to my education. I wish I had something to contribute myself. I do my very best to do the job correctly and safely.
Question for you all....Is every pruning cut you make perfect?

Thanks again for all your help. Even when you're arguing.

No, but firstly thinking through just why the cuts are being made (to achieve what?) and then doing my very best to make each cut as close as possible to the proper target, and having skilled ground support as extra eyes/different perspective makes a big difference.

Nice site! Just thought I'd wave hello to ya all and say . Milling around this place in the time that I have so far has made me a much safer climber; however, it's also turned me into a "got’ a have that gear" junkie.

What started out as a line man's belt & strap (weaver w/ split tail sys. now) just for making firewood has turned into a new gig. I would rather trim than remove trees, but making firewood each year is a must as this is my only heat source.

I look forward to making wood because of the knowledge and gear I have. I can now access trees I otherwise would have avoided. And it’s turning into part time work as well.

Thanks again to all that take the time to post.
