Cassian, I would consider that an invaluable piece of literature. It appears written late in his life with difficulty to wield the pen. I also have a hand written letter from Al from a replied fax. I have a signed copy( David, touch trees)of every book and pamphlet and video he ever put out. I have one of the first copies of A New Tree Biology without the addendum of this first book he published with a written thank you note for purchasing a first copy. He sent the addendum later so he could get it out and make some money. Al never had a problem with us making deserved money.

I attended his Boone NC week long seminar with only 30 students, all with microscopes, and one night went out to dinner with he and Charley Owen, his best friend, with only 4 other guys. I feel blessed through all of this. I have taken many walks through the woods with him and his mycor-riser (shovel).

Yes, the early threats were the tree paint guys, then the flush cut guys, and then the heart rot guys, etc., etc.. He would have kicked their asses if they ever stood in front of him. They could only muster the nerve to snipe at him.

Who would have thought that writing about trees could be so darn exciting???

(Never met him in person sadly would have loved to...but he reminded me in the Sydney and Melbourne vidoes of an older RSM I knew in the mid 80's yeah physically getting into the later part of his life but not someone who would be intimidated by others, and not someone that such would be pretenders would cross in person..)

Yeah Sean, I am sorry you never met him also. His friend Charley Owen referred to him as the ultimate teacher. You were never bored and he made every person he crossed paths with feel that he had time to spend with you alone and everything you said was important.

After hammering down storm destroyed or dead trees for any period of time my wife is used to me saying it is time for me to get a "Shigo fix". Now there is only reading and reminiscing. I get choked up sometimes about it.

Yeah the money mongerers will dig up any old horse to try to make a quid. The good thing is those boys stand out like sore thumbs, making it easy for the men amongst us to let instinct temperd by logic show us the way.
