| Indeed we do have some nice Magnolia's around here. Notably however, they all seem to have scale problems and some also have a twig girdler issue. Handsome trees overall. |

Now you'd have to have some stories with 4 years in that job. Can you give me some insights ... for pruning do you climb with or without spurs? And for take downs do you climb with or without spurs? And of course welcome. ![]()

| Hey thanks for the wlcome all. Ekka I have much from your vids on other sites. Then I found this site. Haven't looked around much but I am in the process. As to your questions on spikes. It depends on the circumstances. Like I said, I work transmission lines. Out in the bounies we climb with spikes. Private work some with or without. Depends on the customer. I know this is dangerous ground for spikers. There is technique to useing gaffs. As to minimize damage to the tree..I say go up like a cat, out like a squirle, down like a spider. In utility work it is saftey, quality, quantity. You can get safety, and quality spikeless. But you wont get quantity. As for service drops. In our area it is up to the home owner to take care of them. You have to be certified an insured to cut with in 10 ft. of primary lines. Service wires sould be handled with care by a professional. When asked, I tell home owner to hire a professional tree service. Most of the time they ask if I would do it." Sorry I cant, but here is a card of someone who can." ![]() |

| Fair enough, over here where I am the power company is responsible to the first point of contact within the property. So on a normal house it's to the roof/meterbox etc but out rural it's the first pole inside the boundary. Some energy companies mandate spurless climbing for all tree work, yes even TD's if the tree is within the close approach distance to the wires. They believe that the spurs would mean if you got energized it would complete the circuit and blow ya feet off. Pretty tough going for climber especially blocking down trunks spurless.

| Wow, that sounds nuts! It actually sounds more dangerous. I was gonna say "Ca is picky, but thankfully not *that* picky"... however, is there actually some foundation to what they claim with that?

| Energex in SE Qld even require climbers to use a friction hitch, no metal ascenders, to reduce electrical hazard. They dont make you use a plastic saw yet!

| Hi ekka, I could solve your problem, but I figured I would give you this so you could calc it yourself, because not every tree has the same lean or weight. Assumptions: Tree is hinged at ground level, it has been cut off! Let T = tension in rope in pounds W = weight of tree in pounds H = distance from hinge (ground) to where rope is tied to tree as measured along the tree Theta = angle between tree and ground alpha = angle between rope and tree L = distance from ground to the center of gravity as measured along the tree, this is the point where a cable attached to the tree could lift it in a balanced position???????? Sum torques about the hinge (butt of tree) T = L*W*cos(theta)/( H*sin(alpha)) Checks: IF theta = 90 degrees the tree will fall over Thus T=0 IF alpha= 90 degrees the tension is a minimum The larger H the smaller the tension Hope this helps, Chris- so just use this equation T = L*W*cos(theta)/( H*sin(alpha)) |
