Hello!
From Northwest Louisiana here!
I've been lurking around here off and on for awhile and don't have much of anything to offer being a noobe to the tree working world and all.
In fact, I never gave it much thought until my large pine tree was struck by lightning last summer and put a big stripe down the side of it. Thinking that it was going to die, I started doing a little research on what might be involved in removing it, I found that a whole world existed dedicated to the profession!
Over the years, I've occasionally seen tree climbers removing huge trees and have always been amazed at how they worked! I seriously thought those guys had to be nuts!
My research though has taught me they are masters of a very well disciplined skill!
Well the tree never did die and looks pretty good so far and seems to be healing where the bark is missing. I had some steel fence posts leaning up against the tree and the lightning must have diverted down those away from the tree rather than into the roots. Not sure though if that's why it's not dead yet!
Anyway, I'm getting the itch to learn how to climb now. I'm finding all sorts of information on the Internet and even sent away for a CD on recreational climbing!
I've even plunked down a few dollars and bought me some gear!
I haven't gotten off the ground yet though!
My body shape is such that I have somewhat of a belly and I tend to want to turn upside down in the saddle! All I seem to get done is wrapping my arms around the rope to stay upright!
So I'm doing more research to figure out why other climbers seem to sit upright in their saddles and I don't!
I read where a chest harness would fix it but haven't tried that yet.
So anyway I just want to say y'all have a nice site here and I really enjoy all the information and videos.
I'm sure I'll probably never do what y'all do here but I really enjoy learning about it anyway!
Kind of like a weekend hunter who reads about the Safaris I guess!
I guess now I'll go back to my lurking and keep listening and reading about all the action!

Welcome.

What sort of harness do you have?

I'm not the slimmest guy around either however what you may find is the bridge (centre attachment point) of the harness when you are sitting usually is up around your chest.

I would say for everyone there's the tendancy to tilt or fall backwards, that's just the same as being on a park swing, the attachment point is infront of you.

I have a Newtribe Tengu saddle.
I've read about a lot of folks saying those saddles were comfortable.
I do think the attachment point is out too far in front of me even though I brought the adjustment as close as I can get it to me. (I need to quit eating) I can see where if I attached myself to the up rope by my chest, that may change the fulcrum point.
I mean I'd still be attached normally to the saddle but also be connected with a carabiner around the up rope from a chest harness. Haven't tried it yet though.
Heres a link to the chest harness. What do you think?

Here's a link to it.

I'm not familiar with those, however take a look at how the bridge works on this harness, see how it seems higher.

Yes!
I noticed your saddle in your videos has a connection like that. What brand is that?
Mine seems to press straight against me in front, sort of pushing me back, or my belly anyway.

It's a Buckingham Traverse but I think tinker with your adjustments.

If you have too much force on your legs toward the knee ends then inversion will be easier than if it's toward your butt end. Adjust those leg straps so there's more force on your butt.

I'll give that a try!
I have to try to make the one I have work because my wife would have a fit if I bought another one!
Thanks!

That's right, it'll be a matter of adjustment... even if you may need to add some rope components.

With your harness when you get it right it should feel as close to a comfortable chair in the tree as your going get,It took me a while to find the right adjustment with mine ( Buck Aussie Traverse), same as Ekka's but once you do you can get on with honing your climbing skills..practice..practice..Climb everyday..and before you know it you will a regular Monkey like the rest of us...LOL...Me I'm more of a gorillaLove climbing but the ground is where I pull my weight best.

Welcome to TreeWorld. Merry Christmas all

Well I fiddled with my tengu saddle some more and adjusted the leg straps up as close as I could, or as close as my crotch would stand anyway, and still had to hang on to keep upright. I moved them out as well and that made it worse!
So I took a ten foot piece of 1/2 inch rope and joined it with a couple of fisherman's knots to make a loop and then wrapped it around myself under my armpits and clipped the ends together and then around the tie in rope. That helped me stay upright a lot better but felt like it was crushing my rib cage! Tomorrow I'm calling the company!
I'm not grossly obese, I just carry my weight above my belt and do have a gut! The way that harness ties into the leg bridge, it puts the up rope directly in front of me which puts the center of balance too far out in front of me. My belly just won't let me pivot close enough to the tie in rope.
I can see how that traverse saddle's bridge ties in at the outside of the hips and allows a climber's belly to protude through the bridge somewhat which would bring the center of balance back closer to the chest.
Also the tie in point looks like it's above the belly.
I don't think that tengu saddle is going to work for me unless I go on a crash diet! I've seen videos of folks sitting in them and they look comfortable and sitting upright hands free but then they looked skinny too!
I think I'm in sort of a catch 22 situation here, I'd probably lose weight if I started climbing but I can't climb until I lose some weight! LOL!!
