Thank you Sean. The pot is about 1500m from my site. No big thing but listed to attract tourists. Local people do not notice about the desert approaching. The process is slow. Wind force increases and blows roofs off. The wind is hot. Water table drops and wells go dry. Native trees die. Survival rate is low for planted trees. I experimented with agro- forestry and am creating a bit of an oases as the surroundings are deteriorating. No soil erosion on my site! Fuel and energy supply all on my 1 Hectare. Keeping out of mischief in the process of trying to restore soil fertility to a depleted site. Bakary Jatta |

Good to have aboard with us Bakary Jatta, what is your annual rainfall like...I live in the dry tropics here in Townsville North Queensland so we get very, very little rain for maybe 4/5yrs then associated with a big storm system like a cyclone get massive falls of almost 1m in 24-36hrs.

Hi Sean, Rainfall was 1.2 /yr average during about 4 months. However it has been dropping and rain gauges are stationary. One example: The nearest rain gauge is only a few km away and we once had a local cloudburst where we got 1.2 m in just 20 minutes. It washed out all the soil and water retention bunds built over a long period of time. Yet 5 km away there was no rain for a long time. The season also starts later then it used to and the first rain is usually insufficient for planting. Second rain may be enough but usually has a dry spell where a lot of the just germinated crop dries up. Later planting does not give enough time for traditional crops to mature. So adaptation to climate change must be considered seriously. (But is not by most) That is my interest and trees on the farm are part of it. Partial shade makes a noticeable difference. Local trees are a slow proposition and therefore I am augmenting them by using exotic species that have been around here for some time now. I am still looking for others that may be easy survivors here. Bakary Jatta |

Welcome welcome. Some-one who can drive that Google Earth well and map Bakary's joint needs to do it and link us the co-ords. Be interesting to see if we could get a map from 10 years ago too. Bakary, are you trying to reforest only 1 hectare? Or more?

Not many trees but looks like a big river there! Maybe they're doing what us Aussies have done to the Murray Darling river system ... sucked it dry, salinated and polluted it... see the latest, it's stuffed!

Hi Yale ![]() That time of year ANYWHERE! It's hot too, I think you should decide which city you are going to, any of the major cities you'll get work that time of year. Might get a break for Christmas though.

Hi Yale, Welcome to Tree World... The climate in NZ is colder than AU..correct me if I'm wrong?..So I would suggest to you if I may, Start your journey in Australia in Melbourne then work your way north aclimatising your self as you go. If you drop strait to QLD/FNQ you will melt for sure, As you know a overheated climber is much more likey to make a mistake and sometimes it only takes one! That's me done. Welcome once more, May The Only Limbs You Cut Be Wood. Take care and all the best, JayD ![]() ![]()

Howdy, everyone. Just heard about this site from a customer of mine who spoke very highly of it. This looks like a great site. I am an arborist from Connecticut, USA. Been in the business since about 1968 with some time off for the military.

Welcome Redstree ![]() What a wealth of experience you would have then. That's near 40 years experience. I wonder what it was like climbing and rigging in those days, what were saddles like and how heavy was the chainsaw? We have a special area for qualified arbo's, just get ya posts up a bit and perhaps some pics, shoot me a PM when ya ready.

Thanks to all who responded. Sorry for the delay in posting, telephone went dead for some time. Deforestation is on-going but a new man at forestry is cracking down on illegal cutting. Survival of planted trees is low as soil is degraded too. Therefore I will try and demonstrate soil restoration by combining Jatropha Curcass, an energy source and soil improver, with other species. Remaining native tree species are preserved. A regional project has used me as an adviser for some years and community forests have been established over some time. The Google map shows mangroves along the river which are also at risk. The struggle continues. Bakary Jatta |
