So that would get away from the impossibility of lifting more than say 40m of hanging rope with one leg, which is pretty much why I thought such long foot locks weren't possible. Hmm..you must get some photos of the event if and when you go TM.

It is the same. Go back to your physics texts & consider relative motion. Lots of people argue this, but physics is physics.

There are some second order effects - the amount of bounce is not the same, for example - but the work is the same, as long as you start and stop the same height off the floor.

I've watched, run, and competed in these climbs. Some of these these folks are D**n fast and they train seriously to win this event. It isn't a cakewalk!

True, true. The bounce is a biggie, though, but the work is the same. As Boa says, the rope's weight of its own self, at greater lengths doesn't allow for as deep a sigmoid as the rope passes through your boots on the footlock. Your footlock style would have to adapt on the fly going for the world record up a giant Kauri tree.

If I do the competition (and I will) I predict I will get my ass kicked. Some of my caving buddies (like the guy below) are mean freaks, and there's a lot of young guns. I will go in with the intent of kicking ass, and if I happen to get my ass kicked, I'll probably be able to live with myself.

If you wouldn't mind, I would like to jump back on-topic for a moment?

The thread title here is Jim Clark, inventor and blah, blah. It started as something else, I can't really even remember what, but someone retitled it and put the word inventor in the title. Hence, people sort of expect to see some inventions, as well they should, 11 pages in. Since that is what this thread has come to become, I need to drop an invention in here and there, or an innovation, or just something really helpful to Arborists.

To make this, you take a cobalt bit and drill into the end of a ratchet. I would use a longer screwdriver bit. It's the bottom-of-the-invention-bucket, so it only gets better from here.

Huk, nyuk, nyuk.

That image is the chainsaw bar clamp I use day to day. It was my first try at melding a stump vise with angle iron. This was my first try.

I have on video the second try. It was a few seconds of plasma torch to blow the points off, wire wheel, and weld the angle iron. Vwah-lah!

Yes, I did, it was like 6 months ago, I set up a tripod and I may have gotten the whole welding of it together in real time. The angle iron comes from interlocking bedframe irons, they're hefty and look nice. Then I pulled the ground off and carved the new owner's name into this nifty new chainsaw bar vise with the plasma cutter.

Then I epoxied it with appliance paint to sort of ice the cake

Would you want to see that? I don't label my tapes very well, so I'd have to hunt it down. Then I would encourage you all to have one made. It doesn't take long. The bed frame irons come as a set of four, so you might want to think about making two clamps if you're gonna go to the trouble of making the one.

It is about time to test another video. Yay? Nay? Mebbe post this one in MPeg4. I will use music from a CD, from an artist whom I have permission to use his music. No itunes interference this time. No Quicktime. Ya wanna give it a ramble?
