Default Transition Period

Just a short note to let you know we are in a transition period that has taken some time to come about.

We are moving hosts and domain name registrars. It has taken a month of persistent emails to have the current host of the site unlock the domain name for transfer freeing us of any handcuffs they held.

I have chosen to have a registrar independent of hosting meaning we are totally free and not bound to any host.

A new host has been acquired and hopefully they do a better job, if they dont it's nice to know we have control of the domain and can go anywhere at any time.

During this transition period if the site goes down please be patient and do keep trying. Domain name registrars need to know who the host is and point the servers in the right direction. It could occur where that information is in "limbo" if the old registrar cuts us off and the new one doesn't have the domain details.

This is all for our benefit, to be free, independent and able to choose hosts. If performance of the site is lacking and support poor we can easily move about the net with new hosts, no more handcuffs.

Again, please be tolerant and patient, this process can take up to 7 days for domain name transfer and another couple of days on top of that for hosting transfer.

Seems to be running a lot faster to me, that's funny, same host and stuff but they didn't have any dns pointing.

Can you guys comment here on any changes in speed you notice.

Nah, it's the server we're on, time to change hosts now but that could mean a board shut down till all files are transfered.

Time to do it I think.

I have not been receiving PM notifications ... I just found new PM's when I went in to read an old message.

Is this only me or is it the same for everyone?

Next move is changing hosts, I'll keep you updated.

It takes time to download 1.6gig of files etc and then load them up to another server.

In that period of time if the board is open all new members and posts wont be transfered so a shut down will be neccessary. We're trying to figure out the best time to do it.

Eric,

Does your forum software allow you to make backups?

Is it possible to make a backup, then upload the backup, make the new host live, then all that remains is updating the new host with the small amount of updating since the initial backup was uploaded, hence reducing downtime?

We have attachments in the file system and data in the sql, both have to go together.

It's the time taken to pull it down and load it up that is the problem. 1.6gig takes a while for me, maybe 10 hours one way.

From the time I click "post reply" it's still taking about 20 - 30 seconds to actually upload my post and change the screen.

I haven't noticed any difference at all, if anything I thought it got worse??

sorry....

Yeah Therrin, I just moved the registrar but now we have to move hosts.

DBS, my speed is 512/512 but I run at around 420 due to distance from exchange.

Yeah, that's fast speeds.

Here they talk about ADSL2 and fast speeds but it's been talk for too long. I have been on the waiting list 2 years now.

This is what happens when 1 ex govt monopoly owns everything and brags about it's $1.8billion dollar half year profit but life goes on at a snails pace.

Ironically when a survey was done about internet speeds 80% of city residents had no complaints and were happy, the people out the bush were rightly pissed off though. Also there's still plenty of dial up connections believe it or not as it's cheap.

I think as far as an internet savvy community Australia is atleast 5 years to 10 years behind with most people still looking for the mouse with a trap in the shed!

OK,

It's been about a month or just over.

How we all going on this server?

My end feels good, I just doing the backup etc so the next 12 hours might be a little bumpy as I try to get 2gig off the server.
