Hickory Daily Record | Man Dies from Injuries in Tree-Cutting Accident (10:47 a.m.)

HICKORY

A man injured in a Tuesday morning tree-cutting accident has passed away.

Michael Wayne Redman, 39, died from massive head trauma at 7:43 Tuesday, according to his brother William Redman, owner of Apple Tree Services.

Michael Redman was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center shortly after 11 a.m.

"When the tree hit the ground, a piece of a dead limb ricocheted and hit him in the back of the head," William Redman said. "He was about 20 feet away from the tree, what he thought was a safe zone, but he had his back toward the tree."

Apple Tree Service, located in Hickory, will be closed for the rest of the week, William Redman said. He has owned the company for five years.

Michael Redman has worked in the tree service business for seven years.
Sort of answers that question about turning your back on the tree.

Unhappy Re: Throwback killed this guy!

Never turn your back on a tree and get as far away as possible.Sorry to hear that it cost a man his life but this kind of work is inherantly dangerous.

When Dad taught me to Fell a Tree in the Bush, we would Always Plan our Escape Route, before the Tree was Notched, and Pick a Tree to hide behind, as the Tree we cut, started to Fell, that way we wouldn't get hit by anything, or Pinned by the Tree, and watch the Tree as it Fell from Cover of the Tree we were Hiding Behind.
I have Watched other guys stand almost right at the Stump, and Watch the Tree as it would Fell. After that, I'd just walk out of the Bush, and get in the Truck, and go to Town. I wanted no Part in their kind of Practice. Bruce.

Interesting because I started another thread about this very fact.

To walk away forwards or backwards?

That sucks man. My condolences to his loved ones..

I wonder if he took the standard 45* degree escape path or ran straight back?

I've cought myself just standing there and watching the tree fall, then making a fast dash out of the dangers zone. Yes, I know better!
