Default SURVEY - A question about tree root auger being safe or not?

I want to survey question. I hope to find an good answer.

My question: How wide, close to trunk, depth, to drill and auger down into soil through and into root systems is safe? The hole dimension is 2-3 inches,
one or two holes are needed only.

I have designed a irrigation/injection device to be installed within optimal circumference of tree trunk. My concern, is it safe and not harmful for roots of young and old trees (plants, too) to be cut in such a matter? Will roots being cut as this, kill the tree? Of course, some degree to positioning an ideal hole location is expected. The install device is below soil surface close to tree, and penetrate near root growth. My question is about root damage?

You can read the draft standard in this thread, talks about roots.

AS4970 Draft| Australian Development Tree Protection

You can use this online calculator to figure out some distances.

Online Calculator for TPZs and SRZs as per AS4970-2009

I would suggest you stay outside of the SRZ.

How many holes etc are you going to make?

How's this thing work, like watering below ground how deep?

You do know roots need air so that's why many are closer to the surface, waterlogging trees can kill them too.

And the important roots are not near the trunk either most of the time, not much point trying to water there

Yeah, leave that spot for the passing K9's to water.
