Arrow Small Engine Horse Power Class Action

Recently I have had to buy a new engine for my stump grinder.

Many of you know of these small engines, brands like Honda, Briggs, Kohler etc.

Many of you know the engines by the way they are sold and marketed using HP (horse power). For example my old stump grinder engine was a Honda 24hp (Honda GX670). Some people have Kohler 20hp or Kohler 25hp engines on their grinders etc.

Well it appears there's been a universal lie told by all somehow, of course the manufacturers deny it. But the engines do not put out what the manufacturers claim.

For instance, the old 24hp Honda only put out 19hp. I bought a new engine (GX690) which under the old way of doing things would have been a Honda 27hp but it actually only has around 2hp more than the old engine, around 22hp. It has around 2hp more and 2nm torque more, that's all.

A class action was commenced, sadly I didn't know about it (to publicise here) and it's too late to get benefits (expired August 31, 2010) for those who have not registered in US and Puerto Rico. Details are below with a link to the website.

You are a Class Member if you live in the United States or Puerto Rico and between January 1, 1994 and April 12, 2010, you purchased a lawn mower containing a gas combustible engine up to 30 horsepower for your own use (and not for resale). Either the lawn mower or the engine of the lawn mower must have been manufactured or sold by a Defendant.

The Settlements include walk-behind and riding lawn mowers where either the lawn mower engine was manufactured by a Defendant, including all these Defendants’ brands (partial list): Yard-Man, Cub Cadet, Honda, Bolens, Exmark, Deere, Sabre, Scotts, Toro, Yard Machines, Craftsman, Troy Bilt, Husqvarna, Poulan, Poulan PRO, Lawn-Boy, Weed Eater, White Outdoor, Snapper, Simplicity, Brute, Murray, and numerous other brands that have engines made by Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, Kawasaki, Honda or Kohler.
So have a look through that site, also be aware of this and check the actual real hp outputs of engines.

The old Honda GX670 (ex 24hp) has been superseded and I opted for the newer GX690, a little more power and bolt relatively straight on. I'm in the process of making the video of how I fit it on the Kanga Terminator as it is a little different. Will keep you updated on that

So how do you find the actual power rating of the engines?

You have to look up the specs, also check torque.

Seems the manufacturers have to come up with a new universal consistent way of measuring whatever it is they are going to use to rate their engines.

I'm amazed, I cant believe they have been doing this for so long.

I have a 20hp Onan engine in my Cub Cadet that I always thought was just as powerful as the others 25-27hp over rated ones. You would think the companies would try to be more truthful. HA!
