Default Queensland Heritage Council calling for submissions

The Queensland Heritage Council is asking for submissions for additions to the Queensland Heritage Register before Jan 26th 2010

All of you Queensland arbo-philes if you have a tree, avenue, copse, grove or forest that you believe meets one of the criteria:

Entry criteria
A place needn't be old to be entered. A place may be entered in the Queensland Heritage Register if it is of cultural heritage significance because of its aesthetic, architectural, historical, scientific, social or technological significance.

It must also satisfy one or more of the criteria outlined in the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. The criteria are:

The place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland's history;

The place demonstrates rare, uncommon, or endangered aspects of Queensland's cultural heritage;

The place has potential to yield information that will contribute to the understanding of Queensland's history;

The place is important in demonstrating the principal characteristics of a particular class of places;

The place is important because of its aesthetic significance;

The place is important in demonstrating a high degree of creative achievement at a particular period;

The place has a strong or special association with a particular community or cultural group for social, cultural, or spiritual reasons.

Sooo.....do you have any trees that you believe fall into any of these categories....I know I do and I have made submissions for them....

Make a difference. Help keep Queensland's heritage alive. (Department of Environment and Resource Management)

...and just in case you think that those trees you value must already be on the register..or some register....well think again!

Sean, thanks for that.

Hey, can you perhaps provide a pic etc of the trees you submitted so we get the idea of what might count. I see that there's criteria beyond it just being a stately tree.

Where or how could we find all the trees on the register at the moment

Also it might prevent duplication.

I submitted the Norfolk Pines planted in avenues in 1934 at Burleigh Heads, the more submissions the better..duplication will be a good thing.

The Heritage Council will evaluate submissions then begin the process of actually assessing those submissions....that in itself can be a long process.

Quote:
Once a place is nominated for entry in the Heritage Register, a complex registration process begins. After nomination, research officers from the department investigate and examine the place. Then, the officers prepare and submit a draft Entry in the Register to the Heritage Register Advisory Committee. The Entry is prepared according to the criteria contained in the Queensland Heritage Act 1992.

The Advisory Committee considers the draft Entry and makes a recommendation to the Heritage Council. Finally, the Heritage Council considers the nomination. If it fulfils the definition of cultural heritage significance and satisfies the entry criteria, the Heritage Council may enter the place provisionally in the Heritage Register. Once a place is provisionally entered, it is protected under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992.
If you feel very motivated you can (and I would strongly encourage those so motivated to do so!) engage with the full blown formal process and its procedures...I did with the Explorers Tree in Hugenden a few years ago, you just might surprise yourselves how much the symbols of our history actually mean to us.

A fragment of the history of those Pines is repeated here

Veteran Tree Group: Photographic records help to age Veteran Trees

Being able to track down supportive evidence of the connection between the tree(s) you wish to nominate and aspects of Queenslands history will of course increase the likelihood of your submission being accepted, and the process of registration put in motion.

A very interesting site Sean, however i couldnt help to notice among all those links to good tree sites, Treeworld has no mention.

I'm sure that it just an oversight given all the exposer Treeworld has provided for this site.

I will have to start looking around to see what I can come up with..

Okay JayD I'll add Tree world to that list.

Of course there is no reason why someone living outside of Queensland could not make a submission to the QHC. There is (as I'm sure you know) an equivalent body in NSW:
Heritage Branch Website - Listing Heritage Items - State Heritage Register - Item View

The LGA's in NSW have a slight head start when it comes to their heritage responsibilities..(on paper at least)...

The nomination process for NSW is similar to how the process operated here in Queensland before this latest call for submissions...

Heritage Branch - Heritage Listings - Nominating for State Heritage Listing

Leichard's Tree - Taroom, Hero's Avenue - Roma and The Dig Tree - Cooper Creek all come to mind so you may want to add them to the list Sean.

Leichardt's Tree is already on the list (Hero's Avenue is not) What I did find that was amazing was a 1932 image of Leichardt's tree and an image of it in 2008. I have a more recent shot but it is far to large and these two are fine for the purpose. It is amazing how time allows a tree to deal with problems
