Default Queensland Arbor Camp 26th - 28th September 2008

Just curious who's coming to this years Arbor Camp?

Quote:
Here is a taste of what’s on the program for this year -

This year we're giving away $2300.00, these competitions are open to all who dare have a go. We will run the Queensland State Pole Climbing Championships, the Aussie Crate Climbing Challenge and the Queensland Arborcamp Axe Throwing Championships just to name a few.

Business People get your hands dirty with personal operation of machinery and products in our ‘Demo Area’. Business planning talks with Gibsons JBS , listen to Phil Smallman and the real life OH&S presentation, Arboricultural presentations and guest speakers Ben Kenyon, Peter Bishop, Scott Hyde just to name a few.

Climbers get involved with hands on climbing with hints and tips from Australia’s finest, Climbing Workshops, simulation competition tree climbing arena and competitions with fantastic prizes. We haven’t forgotten our trusty groundsmen with chainsaw racing, groundie competition, and giant Tug-of-War are just some of the many things to be part of.

Kids have you ever dreamed of running away and joining the Circus? Well this weekend your dreams are going to come true, yes thats right the Circus is coming to Arborcamp especially for the kids! The kids programe will cost you $50 per child for the entire weekend (15yrs & under) and it will be real life workshops on tightrope, juggling and the trapeze. We will also still be runing the Kids tree climbing and other activities they know and love!

Ladies, we haven't forgotten you this year either lets face where in the heart of Devenshire tea country and all those craft stores are lined up along the street. Treat yourself to time out, relax get a massage and watch the children exhaust themselves on their program. Enjoy a trip to the local markets, Climb a tree with Australian Female Tree Climbing Champion Kiah Martin. Enjoy laughs over wine and cheese with all the other girls late afternoon.

Can you afford not to come to Arbor Camp? NO EXCUSE this time Gate Admission IS FREE TO ALL. All this fun, adventure and opportunity to participate in thousands of dollars worth of presentations, demonstration and training. Have a shot at camp competitions with a total prize pool of more than $2000.00. All this for less than the cost of a night out on the town or taking a family of four to one of the fun parks for just one day. Did I mention its tax deductible? Food will be available to purchase on site, all tastes are catered for at the Extreme Catering Canteen from 7am to 7pm, if not to your liking there are numerous amounts of restaurants or take away place just a short drive from the camp grounds.

The trend this year is towards camping. We thought we might try getting back to the real arborcamp style. The real reason is that we love the great outdoors and campming amoungst the very tall trees in crisp mountain air. There are just a few things you have to be aware of, these are the conditions of entry:

* This is a Church run site and as such we are the first people in 25yrs to be allowed alcohol and smoking. Please do not abuse this privilege.

* Noise at night is to be kept to a minumal.

* No Fireworks. Fires are permitted in fire drums only (you must supply your own drum)

* No consumption of Alcohol before 4pm.

*No glass- as this is a family camp broken glass and people so not mix.

*Unrully behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in eviction from camp.

*All rubbish must be placed in bins provided or taken away at completion of camp. This includes cigarette butts.

* Supervision of children is the responsibility of their parents at all times.

* CLIMBERS Gear check is to be done at registration by an official / Trainer (NO GEAR CHECK, NO INSURANCE PAID= NO CLIMB)

Hi Folks,
Free gate entry for day visitors to this event is a real bonusMore money to spend on the goodies you usually find there.

Events like this are well worth going to for the up to date information on Things related to Arboriculture.
You get to meet Climbers, Groundies from all over the place who are living the same life as you,Sometimes making life long friends.

I highly recomend going along for a look,Maybe participating in some of the competitions..new blood challenging the old..Come on All welcome.

Hey, I'm coming! All the way from Bermuda!
Visiting family in Nerang, not far away...
Can anybody send me a schedule of events, I can't download it from the QAA/Arborcamp site, I've tried twice and it sends my computer into a tailspin.
Looking forward to it, never been to a competition before...I have no idea what to expect.

We are looking forward to this year's Arbor Camp. Red Roo will have their entire line up on site.

Chippers:

Drum: Woodsman 730X (10-12"), 750X (15") and the 770X (18").

Disc: Carlton 1260 (6"), 1790 (9"), and the 2012 (12")

Grinders

The new SHP400-2, SP4012's (3 power options), SP7015 (wheel & track units) and will debut the new SMB2750.

I've asked the QAA to provide an obstacle course for the grinders - thought it would be a good thing to let operators see how different machines handle in similar conditions. Any thoughts / comments on this idea? The committee is very pro active on ideas to make Arbor Camp a showcase for the industry.

Great opportunity for everyone to have a close, hard look at what's on offer by different manufacturers.

Look forward to putting some faces to names on the forum!

Thumbs up Venue looks outstanding!

Just back from delivering the first load of equipment out to the site.

The QAA have outdone themselves this year - it is outstanding!

Weather is supposed to be excellent - so no excuses if you need an outing for the weekend!

PS - the kids are going to be well catered for too - play areas and even a circus was setting up!

Hope to see y'all out there!

Cheers

I been today, met Bermie (walking around with a Bermuda shirt is so obvious) and lots of folks.

Top show this year, lots of equipment demo's, plenty going on with bags of room to move and stacks of trees.

There was loads of gear and lots of people testing it out.

Wait for it, wait for it....

My best moment was trying the SRT to the top of a 40 metre eucalyptus, then disconnecting half the kit to go down on a grigri.
Stretching the comfort zone big time! But that's what its all about eh!

Bermie went to Arborcamp!!!

I met Kiah and her WOTT troops, what a cool setup, a big old tree strung about with about eight ropes, loads of kit for kiddies and mums and just about anyone who wanted to try climbing. Let me tell you, they worked their you know whaties off! There were so many kids lining up to try it out, and a good fair few women and fellas too. They made everyone feel welcome and super comfortable, I reckon the seed has been well and truly planted for future arborists! To make the ladies feel even more welcome at Arborcamp, they put on a wine tasting expedition, girls only! That was really good to provide a relaxed place to meet and greet other ladies involved in tree work, whether climbers or groundies or managers or owners or just partners of tree people...the wine was excellent too.

I got in about an hour in the WOTT tree first thing in the morning, then took off to check out the other offerings.
Tried the secured footlock...(got to be an easier way to climb trees...or I just didn't quite get it!) Drooled over fancy new gear at the suppliers tents, ordered a hitchclimber. Watched lots of men trying out the climbing, didn't feel so bad as they huffed and puffed their way up and down, then watched a few guys fly around and felt inadequate...

Then I went over to the SRT tree... a 40 metre (120 ish feet) eucalyptus. I was kitted up with ascender, grigri, foot loop and away I went, right to the top yo! They even had some hammocks set up at the top to cool out in.
I really stretched my comfort zone, higher than I've ever been before, and first time with purely mechanical devices for going up and down. It was a blast, and the view from the top was fantastic. I found out after that the chap up in the tree who was making sure everyone was climbing safely and was comfortable was one of the top guys in Queensland, Brett Hamlin. A real pro, super calm and great at quelling any butterflies!

One of the best things at Arborcamp was the introduction, a chap called Phil Smallman gave a talk on safety. This chap is in a wheelchair, can't walk, the result of an accident in tree work. It was very powerful to listen to him, an example right in front of our eyes of what can happen when things don't go right..I don't know the circumstances of his accident but suffice to say something went wrong.
His basic message was a definition of safety: (paraphrased)
"Work in a manner such as to give yourself the chance to live the life you want to, not the life you have to."
He then said, 'I'm living the life I have to, not the life I want to" in a wheel chair, unable to walk.
That whole thing reinforced to me that my decisions to work safely are giving me the chance to CONTINUE to live the life I want...the maybe added time to clip in twice, settle a good position, think twice before cutting, ask for an extra bit of gear to be sent up, whatever, MY life, MY decision!!

Thanks to EVERYONE for a great time at the Queensland Arborcamp!!!

(I can't post pics just yet, I'm not on my home computer, give it a few weeks though...)
