Hey, I'm coming! All the way from Bermuda! Visiting family in Nerang, not far away... Can anybody send me a schedule of events, I can't download it from the QAA/Arborcamp site, I've tried twice and it sends my computer into a tailspin. Looking forward to it, never been to a competition before...I have no idea what to expect.

We are looking forward to this year's Arbor Camp. Red Roo will have their entire line up on site. Chippers: Drum: Woodsman 730X (10-12"), 750X (15") and the 770X (18"). Disc: Carlton 1260 (6"), 1790 (9"), and the 2012 (12") Grinders The new SHP400-2, SP4012's (3 power options), SP7015 (wheel & track units) and will debut the new SMB2750. I've asked the QAA to provide an obstacle course for the grinders - thought it would be a good thing to let operators see how different machines handle in similar conditions. Any thoughts / comments on this idea? The committee is very pro active on ideas to make Arbor Camp a showcase for the industry. Great opportunity for everyone to have a close, hard look at what's on offer by different manufacturers. Look forward to putting some faces to names on the forum! |

Hands on demo areas is the go, turning circles are aslo an issue in urban yards.

Just back from delivering the first load of equipment out to the site. The QAA have outdone themselves this year - it is outstanding! Weather is supposed to be excellent - so no excuses if you need an outing for the weekend! PS - the kids are going to be well catered for too - play areas and even a circus was setting up! Hope to see y'all out there! Cheers Sean |

I been today, met Bermie (walking around with a Bermuda shirt is so obvious) and lots of folks. Top show this year, lots of equipment demo's, plenty going on with bags of room to move and stacks of trees. There was loads of gear and lots of people testing it out.

Wait for it, wait for it.... My best moment was trying the SRT to the top of a 40 metre eucalyptus, then disconnecting half the kit to go down on a grigri. Stretching the comfort zone big time! But that's what its all about eh!

Bermie went to Arborcamp!!! I met Kiah and her WOTT troops, what a cool setup, a big old tree strung about with about eight ropes, loads of kit for kiddies and mums and just about anyone who wanted to try climbing. Let me tell you, they worked their you know whaties off! There were so many kids lining up to try it out, and a good fair few women and fellas too. They made everyone feel welcome and super comfortable, I reckon the seed has been well and truly planted for future arborists! To make the ladies feel even more welcome at Arborcamp, they put on a wine tasting expedition, girls only! That was really good to provide a relaxed place to meet and greet other ladies involved in tree work, whether climbers or groundies or managers or owners or just partners of tree people...the wine was excellent too. I got in about an hour in the WOTT tree first thing in the morning, then took off to check out the other offerings. Tried the secured footlock...(got to be an easier way to climb trees...or I just didn't quite get it!) Drooled over fancy new gear at the suppliers tents, ordered a hitchclimber. Watched lots of men trying out the climbing, didn't feel so bad as they huffed and puffed their way up and down, then watched a few guys fly around and felt inadequate... Then I went over to the SRT tree... a 40 metre (120 ish feet) eucalyptus. I was kitted up with ascender, grigri, foot loop and away I went, right to the top yo! They even had some hammocks set up at the top to cool out in. I really stretched my comfort zone, higher than I've ever been before, and first time with purely mechanical devices for going up and down. It was a blast, and the view from the top was fantastic. I found out after that the chap up in the tree who was making sure everyone was climbing safely and was comfortable was one of the top guys in Queensland, Brett Hamlin. A real pro, super calm and great at quelling any butterflies! One of the best things at Arborcamp was the introduction, a chap called Phil Smallman gave a talk on safety. This chap is in a wheelchair, can't walk, the result of an accident in tree work. It was very powerful to listen to him, an example right in front of our eyes of what can happen when things don't go right..I don't know the circumstances of his accident but suffice to say something went wrong. His basic message was a definition of safety: (paraphrased) "Work in a manner such as to give yourself the chance to live the life you want to, not the life you have to." He then said, 'I'm living the life I have to, not the life I want to" in a wheel chair, unable to walk. That whole thing reinforced to me that my decisions to work safely are giving me the chance to CONTINUE to live the life I want...the maybe added time to clip in twice, settle a good position, think twice before cutting, ask for an extra bit of gear to be sent up, whatever, MY life, MY decision!! Thanks to EVERYONE for a great time at the Queensland Arborcamp!!! (I can't post pics just yet, I'm not on my home computer, give it a few weeks though...)
