Default Prank calls - telemarketers - internet spam - hacking - SMS's

Here in Australia we have the do not call register.

https://www.donotcall.gov.au/

If you list your number here you should expect to stop receiving calls within around 6 weeks ... apparently there's a little lag time.

Also, if you receive calls from overseas they are obliged to comply with our laws.

Recently I have had a spate of prank calls, telemarketers, even tradesmen wanting to come to my house to do repairs all courtesy of some low lives enjoyment.

With internet it's easy for anyone to get your email and subscribe to anything they like ... however I have kept a whole folder of these, documented the calls, a forwarded the whole shebang to the cops.

The interesting part was one of my phone numbers harassed was a private mobile number only a select few people had.

Just thought I'd start a thread more for awareness and if any members here are finding themselves receiving spam or emails etc I'd appreciate if you could let me know so we can pull records to nail the low lives. On this forum these details are hidden .... however if you reply to a received email you automatically disclose yours.

One of the things I'm proud to say about this forum is the the people we keep out. If you are pestered, harassed or intimidated by any member let me know, this is a secure place for professionals not spam junkies and low lives with nothing better to do.

I'm looking at a Spam Nuker product for the forum ... use the PM system and try to not to publish your email.

The forum behind the scenes has had some spam linkbacks that I nailed to .... it's lockdown on these scams, many are simply bot operated however once one of the scumbots gets here it likes to gather info. That info is locked away now, zero bot access.(They are pretty stuffed now, cant get to members areas, profiles, etc.)

You still get the odd scumbag who signs up and pesters etc ... it's the latest rage, link farming and spamming.

Never ever open an attachment or paperclip (this is for your personal emails at home) unless you know the author. Some times there is no attachment you can see just a short exe coded virus to bite ya PC.

We have filters running a wide array of IP's and know scum sites and email addresses etc from joining, doing what I can however the recent targeting of this site means one big word.

MOTIVE

What's the motive? You'll work it out, but the idiots aint as smart as me.

Some new registrations have been screened in to a restricted users group where PM and email facilities have been removed. They can post but cannot edit. If you are in this group unfairly then just post and live life as usual ... we can change it easily enough once we establish your membership as genuine.

So, lots going on behind the scenes, just thought you'd like to know.

Here's the place you can report all spam including SMS's.

I even have one stubborn company that after phone calls and emails they continue so I dobbed them in.

ACMA - Home page

Page on spam
ACMA - Spam & e–Security

This URL provides some free software to not only attach to your emails but it will send the details on to the the govt who in turn automatically build a database and try to nail the culprits.

ACMA - Reporting spam

And here's a handy website for scams

Guys, a buddy of mine sent that to me about a month ago, and I saved it. Every time I think about it I have a little chuckle. I would like to try it out sometime, I'm pretty sure I would get by the first couple line before I started laughing.

By the way HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Don't trust your caller ID!
Those numbers can be spoofed!

The do not call register is for private lines only. If you submit a business line they will send you a request to prove that is not a business line or they remove you from the list.

They haven't asked me yet and I've told of 4 numbers I have, but not the 1300 number. Sshhh.

At least you can stop the sms's regardless. And your mobile phones should be able to get off too unless you advertise them.

I also believe you are allowed to have the organisation that calls you remove you from a database. However most say they're calling from the YP etc and you cant stop that.

I get them on my 1300 number a fair bit, just got to deal with them quickly, I just ask if they're after a quote or selling something, it's either one of the two and you can almost hear them squirm.

Most common they say, "Oh, neither really, we're just calling because bla bla bla save you bla bla mortgage ... bla bla bla...." And I stop them right there and say well it's not a quote then and continue the grilling as to how they got me, remove me from database etc.

Hey, this is no BS. Just recently I had one offering website help and they reckon they could get my site to number 1 on Google for a nominal fee instantly. You reckon I had fun with that call, plus I'm #1 anyway! Their proposal was to use masked adwords, in other words they set you up for pay per click advertising for a fee and monitor plus skim it. Origin of call was guess where?

Here's an article i came across on callers spoofing the number that shows up on your caller ID.

You can never be quite sure who's calling you or where their call is coming from! So be careful that you don't give out critical information you believe is to a legitimate caller.

USATODAY.com - Caller ID spoofing becomes all too easy
