Default Portable milling

Hi Tree World
I recently asisted with felling a Himalayan Cedar in the suburbs of Melbourne. We have kept a log (2.5mt long, ~1mt diameter). I was hoping to get it milled on site so some slabs can be saved and dried for future use.
Any ideas/suggestions/contacts?
Cheers

Default Re: Portable milling

Bandsaw milling is preferred to chainsaw milling - less sawdust, less wasted wood, more precision cutting, less planing when dried. Best to determine sizes and use before milling - most people have a charge to come, and then a charge for the time on site. If it is a large log (diameter and length), try to get someone with hydraulic lift arms to lift the log up to the saw. Once the lumber is cut, I have found an unheated garage or shed -- out of the wind and sun -- and well stickered the best way to dry the lumber -- unless you are going to kiln dry it. Lumber air dries at about 1" thickness per year. This has to be a labour of love or sentimentality or otherwise unavailable species, because economic wise this method seldom pays. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!
