Default Logan City Council please explain! I wonder if there were casualties?

Here is a copy of the email I sent to Logan City Council in March last year. Also since then I have numerously told them via phone of the problem.

Please note, the video link etc all works still today and you can view the video I shot back then.

Seems when advice is free it's not worth much. You must watch the video 1st. www.palmtreeservices.com.au/video/winnettsrd.wmv

There's a series of pics attached for you to see what happened. Also note the warnings in the email, I wonder how many tree loppers would have climbed that if it were a removal ... after all if you are insured and cheap that's all that matters doesn't it?

I put extra commas in email addresses to prevent spam if any scum bag bots are watching here.

Subject: Bunya pine at Winnetts Rd round-a-bout Shailer Park

Hi

I encourage you to watch this video regarding an extremely hazardous tree.

The video is 2.38mins long and 12.89MB in file size, in WMV streaming format so it will buffer.

www.palmtreeservices.com.au/video/winnettsrd.wmv

Personally, it's within striking distance of the all roads and frankly I would be cutting that down ASAP! Also, the area is earmarked for future highway expansion so might possibly get the chop anyway, but I wouldn't be waiting too long if I were you guys.

Did you know that the big Bunya pine in Toptaste Barkery on Gympie road Kedron failed not long ago and fell across 4 lanes of traffic during the day, by miracle no-one was injured as the traffic lights down the road were red! Chances of that are incredible, usually you'll have a solid 4 lanes of traffic in the afternoon. That failure didn't look as bad as thisd tree for VTA.

Regards
Eric Frei

PS: I would be insisting a tower be used for this removal due to the high risk of failure.

Most trees fail in adverse weather, no rocket science in that.

Brisbane is "on the rounds" for regular adverse weather with a history of cyclonic conditions.

Do you think there's a standard that buildings in this area must be designed for wind speed?

Of course there is.

And would it not then be prudent to ensure that trees be able to stand up to the same treatment?

So when assessing trees wouldn't it be prudent to know the wind history and look at the tree from that perspective?

Of course it would, if we build something that has to stand up to a certain level of wind then it becomes pretty much accepted that everything should. So saying a regular 80km/h wind blew over that tree is simply not on and was predictable, and the other two trees are standing.

There's a standard.

Quote:
Australian
Standard AS 1170, Part 2 ?SAA Loading Code Wind Forces?).
But ask at your council, there'd be something about it, find out what it is. Houses etc built out there have to be to a design standard, be good if there's some material on it.

The hard part is assessing the tree, like those New Farm Jacarandas and all the hoohaa/testing about whether they stay or go, who's got a way of finding out if they'll blow over? Is there a way to test them for that?

That is the key, when you know how to do that without destroying the tree or what's near it then you got something.

But then, if you know it's going to fail in a 110km/h wind and it's healthy what would you do? That becomes a whole new ethical issue to some, but not for me. It's no secret, short fat trees are safest ... maybe more bottle trees then.

Since we are five months later now, could you tell us what happened to this tree?
Did the council take your effort seriously after all?

Just cleaned up after some of those guys, they topped a redwood under the lines and left almost the whole mess of branched in an old ladys back yard. She called us to take away the rest of her hacked tree and clean up the mess those guys left behind. Wish I had pics of that one took the ramaining 15- 20 branches then went to work with the MS660 on the way back down.

A group of Bunya pines resides on the corner of Tygum Road and Beenleigh Road Waterford West.

Back in 2005 there was a lot of hoohaa when a few had to be taken out, as recomended by a consultants report. However this one was left on the shops side.

I took these pics August 2007 ... the tree failed 6 months later. Miraculously the only damage was to a sign in the shops car park. The trees would be close to 1m DBH and perhaps 30m tall, lots of traffic and targets in all directions.
