Queenstown Lakes District Council parks manager Gordon Bailey said the theft of the protected species was very unusual, requiring considerable planning and effort.

The offenders would have had to boat out to the remote island, position the boat precariously against the cliff and chainsaw several branches so they would drop into the boat below, he said.

"We are pretty p*ssed off about it, to be honest."

The council wanted to talk to anyone who might have seen the wood thieves near the island in the past three weeks. If the offenders were caught, they would face court action, he said.

The 100-year-old tree, one of 20 on the island, would survive, he said.

Rata is a threatened species, surviving mainly on islands away from the devastating impact of possums, he said.

They must be planning to germinate rata trees to rule the world!!!

Why would you go to all that trouble to get some firewood??? Seems very odd....

There may be some rituals or religious connections to these trees for someone to go to that length. wow i wonder if they want a job.
