Heard a story where a couple of guys were in the bucket removing a tree and they encountered one of these in the canopy. You would need new undies and pants after having that come at you.
out in the country they are common, have heard of them getting scared and getting confused and actually run up a person, usually they run up trees. The bite from one ulcerates, takes forever to heal.

I had them where I lived at Five Day Creek, big mothers, they were always trying to get into the house if you went out and left the door open to scavenge. I know who was more scared when I got the straw broom and started whacking them to get them out of the house, they do hiss, but they sure moved out quick. They were huge up there, big mothers, biggest I've seen, I was always worried that one would freak and climb up me.

Used to save the turkey leg bones from a turkey dinner, which is a pretty big bone, throw it to them, they would grab it, climb the closest tree and straddle the tree trunk, gripping the trunk with their legs use the trunk to push the bone into their stomachs, talk about freaky, but funny to watch, not much to amuse you in the sticks.

Two croc attacks in the last week, two survivors ... one selling his story for heaps!

Croc victim's knees need replacing

A young fisherman who miraculously survived a monster crocodile attack will undergo multiple operations for fractures and deep puncture wounds.

A four-metre saltwater crocodile attacked Todd Bairstow, 28, while he fished on a creek bank at Weipa on Cape York Peninsula on Wednesday.

His injuries are horrific, but not life-threatening, and include dislocated joints, multiple puncture wounds and a fractured finger.

He underwent a second round of surgery on Friday at the Cairns Base Hospital.

The four-hour surgery involved washing out infected wounds, including a large one on his left knee, a hospital spokeswoman told AAP.

She said his injuries were extensive and he would require multiple rounds of surgery.

"It was very intensive to clean those wounds," she said.

"You can imagine what a crocodile bite would be like."

"Doctors will be assessing him daily."

She said it's unclear when the next operation will be as it depended on how well he was healing.

Police say the croc lunged at the mine worker and tried to drag him by the legs into Trunding Creek on Wednesday afternoon, but he saved himself by grabbing onto mangroves on the bank.

He also owed his life to Weipa local Kev Bevin who saw the attack and bravely went to help him.

Mr Bevin said he whacked the croc with a tree branch until it let go.

Wildlife rangers plan to trap the animal and take it to captivity.

A WEIPA fisherman fought for his life to free himself from the jaws of a 4m crocodile by holding on to mangroves and punching the monster with his bare fists.

Todd Bairstow, 28, a Rio Tinto bauxite mine worker, was fishing on the banks of Trunding Creek near the Albatross Hotel when the huge crocodile lunged out of the water about 4pm yesterday.

The croc attack victim reportedly told Weipa Hospital staff he fought for his life with the 4m monster "for about 15 minutes" before locals heard his cries and ran to his aid to help drag him to safety.

Mr Bairstow told medical staff how he desperately clung on to mangroves to prevent the big croc dragging him underwater.

One pub worker said patrons reported seeing the croc still holding on to Mr Bairstow.

"He's a monster all right," he said. "They said the head was as long as a man's arm.

"Some said they saw the croc on his legs. There was a cry for help and the patrons outside the pub rushed down and stopped him being dragged under."

Last night Mr Bairstow was flown by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Cairns suffering extensive lower limb lacerations, cuts to his hands, a broken leg and dislocated joints.

He was taken to Cairns Base Hospital about 11.15pm where he was reportedly in a stable condition.

Mr Bairstow, an avid fisherman, pig hunter and outdoorsman, told friends on Facebook how he was "living the dream" in the wilderness of Cape York where big crocodiles are a familiar sight in creeks and waterways.

He only got full-time work with Rio Tinto in Weipa in January.

A FEISTY reptile has been given a second shot at life after a daring rescue and emergency surgery.

The lace monitor was plucked from a tree off Michelangelo Drive, at Redlynch in Cairns, by a snake catcher who feared it had been injured because its leg looked swollen.

But getting him down was no easy feat for snake-turned goanna catcher David Walton, the Cairns Post said.

The goanna, nicknamed Michelangelo or Mick, put up a hell of a fight.

Mr Walton climbed up his 12m ladder but had to jump into the tree and chase Mick as he climbed higher.

"I was 50 feet (about 15m) in the air and thought, 'Oh man'. Then I just grabbed him and he grabbed me."

Mick's "massive sharp claws and a mouthful of teeth" tore Mr Walton's long-sleeved shirt and dug into his leather gloves as they made their way down.

"He gave me hell," Mr Walton said. But the goanna was just scared and hurting from a massive tumour on his left front leg that extended to his neck.

"It looked like a potato and it smelled because it was infected. It was terrible."

Mr Walton took the reptile to Redlynch Valley Vets.

Veterinarian Liza Sergeev said the decision had to be made whether to euthanase or try to save the 1.5m-long reptile, which was underweight at 4.6kg.

"Mick is very bright and wants to live and has a bit of fight, that's why we wanted to save him. There was nothing to lose," Dr Sergeev said.

It was his only chance of survival as the tumour had stilted his mobility, hindered his ability to feed himself and was infected with maggots.

The 90-minute pro bono surgery on Tuesday, her first on a goanna, went smoothly and the 380g tumour was removed.

"It was humungous, it was just under 10 per cent of his body weight," she said.

"But he's really bright and using his leg. He's hissing at me so that’s a good sign."

Mick has 12 stitches and the wound is expected to heal slowly.

A carer would tend to the reptile during his recovery and it was hoped he would be released back into the wild in six weeks.

Watch out its Cup Moth Lava season in VIc

Australian Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) contain several species of caterpillars that are armed with stinging hairs and/or fragile spines. These modified hairs serve as an effective means of protection against predators intertested in the soft bodied caterpillars. Skin contact with these specially equipped caterpillars can produce severe irritation and inflammation which is often referred to as lepidopterism.

Cup moth have envenomating hairs, which are tubular or porous spines capable of holding a venom or irritant produced by a gland at the base. On contact, the tips of the hair break under pressure and release their fluid contents, which is generally a mixture of histamines.

That's the size of the beggars up at Five Day Creek, that I used to have to hit with the broom to get out of the house. BIG. Must have some age on them, but they were more scared of me......I think.

I used to encounter blokes his size and bigger at Ferndale Pk, Barrington Tops NSW. Your first encounter with one of these huge lizards is pretty scary, Dangerous especially if you panic, young children, well the thought of what could happen is terrifying..

Diet

The diet of goannas varies greatly depending on the species and the habitat. Prey can include all manner of small animals: insects, smaller lizards, snakes, mammals, birds, and eggs.
Meals are often eaten whole, and thus the size of their meal may depend on the size of the animals. Many of the small species feed mostly on insects, with some being small lizard experts. Many of the medium to large species will feed on whatever prey items they can catch. This includes eggs, fish (V. Mertensi), birds, snails, smaller lizards, snakes, marsupials and other small mammals such as rodents. The giant perentie has been observed killing a young kangaroo, and then biting out chunks of flesh like a dog.
All species are carrion eaters and will feed on the carcasses of dead animals, including livestock and other large creatures. The smell of rotting meat will attract these lizards.

The old saying " their harmless " is probably true but potentially they are capable of killing you. I remember watching something about these Goanas and they said it's the bacteria in their mouth is what causes most of problem with infection. After a little research it would seem they produce a venom

Quote:
Lizards' poisonous secret is revealed

18:00 16 November 2005 by Emma Young
Monitor lizards - commonly kept as pets - and iguanas produce venom, according to surprising new research that is rewriting the story of lizard and snake evolution.

Until now, nasty swellings and excessive bleeding as a result of a lizard bite were blamed on infection from the bacteria in the creatures' mouths. Venom had been considered the preserve of advanced snakes and just two species of lizard - the gila monster and the Mexican beaded lizard. And scientists had thought these lizards evolved venom production independent of snakes.

But research Bryan Fry's team at the University of Melbourne, Australia, now suggests that venomous lizards are much more widespread than anyone realised. Furthermore venomous lizards and snakes are in fact descended from a common ancestor that lived about 200 million years ago.

In a related paper published in the journal CR Biologies this week, two of Fry's co-authors, Nicolas Vidal and Blair Hedges of Pennsylvania State University, US, christen this new toxic taxonomic clade Toxicofera. They also suggest a complete overhaul of the conventional classification of lizards and snakes, based on new DNA analysis.

"These are very exciting papers," says Harry Greene, a herpetologist at Cornell University, US. "They threaten to radically change our concepts of lizard and snake evolution, and particularly of venom evolution."

Photoshop I'd say. No King Browns around there, and they only grow to 2.75m/9ft anyway.

A few Death Adders though.

Wild pig goes troppo in a town then bites woman

Wild pig on the run causes chaos in Mossman- Local Cairns News | cairns.com.au

Quote:
Friday, July 8, 2011
A FERAL pig fleeing a cane fire caused havoc at Mossman when it charged through the hospital, down a street and through a backyard fence before biting a local woman on the leg.

The pig, estimated to weigh more than 100kg, entered through the automatic doors of the hospital and staff who heard grunting and squealing noises went to
investigate.

On seeing the hospital staff approaching, the pig jumped through a window, smashing the glass, and ran down Johnson St before crossing a busy road into Watson St, all the while chased by two men.

The animal then charged through a fence, giving a nasty surprise to local woman Zhanna Belsar who was gardening in her backyard on the Sunday afternoon.

The confused and highly agitated pig charged her and although Ms Belsar tried to fight it off with a spade, the animal broke the implement and then bit her on the right leg.

Ms Belsar received a nasty 7cm cut that required medical treatment.

The two men who had chased the pig came to her rescue and managed to get on top of the enraged animal, allowing Ms Belsar to run inside her house.

The pig was captured and killed.
