Its alright man.in the past 2 years I've gone from 4 pots of coffee a day to 1pot and now from that down to 2 cups a day.the headaches suck.

yep did it for 4 years.I quit drinking so much when I started having chest pains and found out about the hbp.I was also guzzling energy drinks like no tommorrow.

Most users will suffer from symptoms of fatigue and depression, irritability, tremors, jumpiness, deprivation of deep sleep, and vascular headaches, as the blood vessels in the brain dilate. Caffeine, however, can be medically useful as a cardiac stimulant, and also as a mild diuretic used to flush the system.

One of the mechanisms that caffeine addiction, cocaine addiction, and heroin addiction share, is that they block an adenosine's ability to slow the nerve cells' activity in preparation for sleep, and instead increase the speed of their activity and of the neuron firing in the brain. The caffeine causes the blood vessels in the brain to constrict, because it has blocked the adenosine's ability to open them to allow sleep. The ability of caffeine to close the blood vessels is why many pain relievers contain caffeine. If a person has a vascular headache, the caffeine in the medicine will shut down the blood vessels, thus easing the pain.

The increased neuron firing in the brain triggers the pituitary glands to release hormones that tell the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline, also known as epinephrine. Adrenaline, the "fight-or-flight" hormone, gives the user's body a boost, and heightens the person's alertness.

One final mechanism caffeine, cocaine, and heroin share, is their ability to manipulate dopamine production. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter, activates the "pleasure centers" in certain parts of the brain, and simply makes a person feel good. Naturally, the pleasurable effect produced by dopamine manipulation plays a prominent role in caffeine addiction.

The short-term effects resulting from caffeine consumption, such as alertness, renewed energy, and pleasure, may not necessarily outweigh the longer-term effects of caffeine addiction. Caffeine, despite its similarities to amphetamines, has side effects that are not nearly as severe, and withdrawal symptoms that are, generally, not life-threatening.

Compare caffeine to the harder stuff if you like,but as you say the addictive levels and pain of withdrawal are not comparable, thank goodness.

Hey newguy, what do you do for stimulation now? Many good nondrug strategies.

I'm naturally stimulated I guess.I usually go to bed a 1 and get up at 7 and go hard all day without to much hassle but slowed way down without as much caffiene[stupid heart not doing what i want it to do].I remember staying up for 72 hours straight once.lotta coffee and energy drinks those 3 days.did it when I was 14.

Bigshea, this obviously is researched data (and extremely interesting I might add). I d like to know the source or have a link to get a sited hard copy for family members (I quit long ago, along with about everything else).

The addictive levels may well be similar, granted, the pain of withdrawl is *not* similar, but you need to see the real point he was trying to make.

That point, is the overall *effect* that these things have on the body.
They all affect similar chemical changes and basal reactions in the body, and can cause similar amounts of stress on bodily function. And while a single cup of coffe, or even 3, you might say is incomparable to meth, heroin, or cocaine.... it's not about a cup of coffee or 3. It's about 2 to 4 to 6 POTS of coffee a DAY!

So in all reality, even the physical effect on the body may be similar, in that regard.

There's a significant amount of caffeine in TEA too.
When I studied in my former Laboratory career...we did a prac session and extracted caffeine from brewed tea. A surprisingly large amount present.....but I could'nt give in exact milligrams/gm of leaf...it's too long ago.

Moral...dont replace pots of coffee with pots of tea...it's nearly as bad.
