You might be interested in having Mvaden's "pruning" page on wikipedia changed then so that the entire WORLD doesn't see that "topping is an acceptable form of pruning when done correctly." I'm not bashing him for the hell of it, rather for the topic, and the fact that he is specifically endorsing it, as well as attaining advertisement from it. |

I'm not trying to "continue bashing him", but I think that several of you aren't looking at what I was talking about. It isn't as much his post on this thread, as much as when you look up "PRUNING" on wikipedia. They even labeled the BBR as the branch collar... would YOU want your name at the bottom of that page? Yes this page needs some work to. I'll put up pics of the 3 types of unions in trees with their relevent cuts ... as you can see by the responses on this forum even arborists guess! Recognise the union, then you know the cut, easy. ![]() This was the pic that was there.

The top of that cut is too close to (even into) the collar... cut 3 should start out from the leave branch leaving the collar completely in tact. Also the final cut should be just slightly outward to the leave branch, not steeply angled away from it. Several sources that I have on the subject consider cut 3 as shown as the WRONG WAY to cut a branch. Most have the final cut parallel to the leave branch, or angled slightly away from it (angle a and angle b and such gets too complicated). Cut 1 and cut 2 are fine here though. But that's me and my UC (University of California) Davis training methods. I also found this on a UC Davis web site (back to the original topic of topping trees): In summary, you can prolong the useful life of your trees by making proper pruning cuts and avoiding all unnecessary wounds. Be sure to avoid topping trees, especially old trees. Serious branch and trunk decay often results from topping. |

I remember reading somthing about making the final cut from the bottom up as not to rip any part of ridge/collar.

Up, down, sideways doesn't matter, it should always be a small stub piece anyway with little weight for tearing bark. Sharp fast chain, or sharp handsaw to avoid bad bark tearing when pushing through.

That's 1' dia branches, crikey! ![]() We're talking pruning not removals. ![]() I just leave smaller stubs. But seriously, it's not often you make cuts that big pruning. Then again, I dont do as much pruning as you guys. There are times though you have to cut upwards due to the angle of the branch union, sometimes you just cant start at the top and have to finish there. I'm not fussed, can cut a scarf from front, back, left or right, dont matter to me which way round I go, but dont tear the bark is golden rule.
