A drunk man with forestry experience used a chainsaw to chop down a 'huge' palm tree in a public Napier park.

The 22-year-old made two attempts to chop the Phoenix palm tree at Nelson Park at 11.30pm last night, Senior Sergeant Sarah Stewart said.

"These trees are huge ... possibly a metre in diameter and 20-30 metres tall..."

"He initially cut the tree and it didn't fall down, so he went back to his address and grabbed some wedges, returned and then finished cutting down the tree."

Police arrested him at a nearby address afterwards, where the chainsaw was located, and charged him with criminal damage.

The incident highlighted how poor decisions could be made while intoxicated, Senior Sergeant Stewart said.

"In that interim time when he'd just done a straight cut ... it was significantly posing danger to anyone nearby."

The man had previously been a forestry worker but it was not immediately clear if he was currently employed as one.

I hate palms to i just hope that hi remembered to wash out his saw he might get some serious corrosion in it
