I forwarded that newspaper report to the DECCW and they have sent me an email stating that they are asking their Grafton office to look into it.
Good on you, I like people that stand up for what they believe in.

It is a pity they took down a rare and endangered tree. Certainly if a private company had down that, they would be fined and told to replace the tree - as large as could survive. I am sure the councils have insurance, why can't they apply the same rules to themselves? If they did, maybe such "accidents" would be a whole lot rarer.

here's a picture of a notice on a condemned tree for public information...
I am surprised they consider a tree with so many leaves on it as needing removal. Our trees are usually dead for 1-2 years before they decide it needs to come down.
But I do like the idea of a public notice for significant trees. Here they put a red dot -- about 2 " diameter 4 ft up. That's it!

.......................

I suppose if they fine themselves they would have to take themselves to court, LOL, then their insurance premiums would go up......... which the ratepayers pay for ultimately

perhaps they should replace that tree with ten provenance, that is if they can find some seed bank.

Yeah, well I guess money talks, and arguably the best way to ensure Tweed Council does more than just "consider reviewing it's internal practices" is to hit them with a whopping great fine.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander, it will be interesting how it all pans out, even if they are given a warning or inquiries from DECCW, it will cause some concern to them. Bottom line is, it will be blamed on the crew, not management, but it will put the wind up them somewhat.

Post if you hear any more, should be interesting.
