Default burls

Hello, im new here but im intrested to know how to go about harvesting burls, and how to know if i need a permit to be in the forests that i decide to go to. id hate sneaking around with a chainsaw trying to keep from being caught.in other words i want to be fully legal

im located in southwest virginia usa im just looking to harvest burls freely. when a fella is seen going into the woods with a rifle just to target practice or just to be shooting... no big deal.But a chainsaw.well thats were the rules come in. I DONT NO THEM and i hear you can get in trouble. I dont want that

I would say you contact the appropriate owner of the land whether that be forestry or private owner etc.

How are you going to cut them off, flush cut the trunks of trees leaving large wounds? Personally I would forbid it unless they're on dead trees, even then I could see mass mutilation of habitat and a commercial venture trashing the forest.

So I dare say a variety of answers will be found, but if it's a private land owner and the tree is not protected then you may slice and dice all you want I suppose.

Im not trying to wreck the forrest. I just wanted to find a few for personal use. Im not a logger or anything like that (commercial). In other words im just one man trying to obtain a few for myself or one big one for a table would do the trick. Thier twisted unpredictable grain is just so beautiful to see. So I should only get them from dead or almost dead trees? that would be ok with me.

Yeah I know but authorities will likely think worst case scenario and precedents set.

Thank you sir, for your input you have been most helpful. I do want to be responsible to keep sustainable forrests so I shall ask around, perhaps a conservation officer would know huh? or lawyer who know it doesnt hurt to ask
