Default Arboriculture| Arborist training in New Zealand| Where to get it step by step

A number of options are avaliable to New Zealand Arborists in regards to training avaliable in Arboriculture. There are three main providers of education at different levels catering for part time and full time study:

Waikato Institute of Technology

Is the largest provider of Education in New Zealand.Located in the Hamilton Gardens, Hamilton. Provides both part time and full time programmes from Certificate Level to Diploma Level. The Advanced Certificate in Arboriculture(level 4) is the most common Qualification at Wintec and takes approximately two years of full time study to achieve the Qualification. Diploma in Arboriculture (level 6) takes a further year of full time training to achieve. Wintec Also offers Block courses that contribute to the Cert in Arb (level4) and on site training programs at your place of work. Please visit Wintec: Arboriculture for more information.

Otago Polytechnic

Is situated in Dunedin, Otago. Provides a Certificate in Arboriculture (level4) which takes one year to complete. This course is similar to the Wintec program but does not encorporate the Certificate in Horticulture (level 3). Excellent program if time restraints are a problem.

visit Otago Polytechnic: Programme details for more information.

NZ HITO

This is a Modern apprenticeship designed to take three years to complete, working towards a number of levels or training listed below:

Groundworker (Level 2)
Transplant Worker (Level 3)
Basic Climber (Level 3)
Utility Worker (Level 4)
Advanced Climber (Level 4)
Consultant Climber (Level 4)

These programmes result in a national certificate as per level. This is an on the job training scheme where an accessor comes to your place of work. Some programmes require travelling to a specific location.

Please visit Arboriculture — New Zealand Horticulture Training Organisation (Inc) - NZHITO for more information.

All programmes are credited towards NZ unit standards and can be achieved part or full time.
