Default $10k reward up for grabs

$10k reward for tree lopper - Search widens for vandal - Local News - News - General - St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

Quote:
SOMETIMES, in Illawong, you can't see the million-dollar views for the trees. At least that was the case at one Sproule Road property until someone chopped down 104 trees.

It would have been difficult work, as the steeply sloping block overlooks the Woronora River and Bonnet Bay.

And since Sutherland Shire Council has now offered a $10,000 reward to catch the offender, the amateur logging spree may prove expensive, too.

The owner of the block in question, and all the immediate neighbours, say it's a mystery to them.

The reward is payable for information that leads to a conviction, which could result in fines totalling hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The council will also pursue a revegetation order that would require the replanting of the block and its future maintenance.

A council spokeswoman said the case was one of the worst in the shire's history.

``The removal was discovered when council officers assessing an application on an adjacent property noticed a large amount of trees cut down,'' she said. ``There was a check of council records to establish there was no approval to remove the trees and an investigation began.''

Council officers spoke to the owner of the block, who said he had no knowledge of the tree lopping.

Inquiries with other residents of Sproule Road, and a letterbox drop in the area, also failed to turn up any leads, prompting the council to go public to catch the culprit.

``The council intends to continue its investigation into who may be responsible for this environmental carnage,'' the spokeswoman said. ``We would be interested to hear from anyone with any relevant information.''

Phone the council on 9710 0333.
