Location is in the redeveloped park on the foreshore Esplanade. http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=lota&hl=en&ll=-27.466521,153.192146&spn=0.000757,0.002064&sll=-27.465594,153.192394&sspn=0.006102,0.016512&gl=au&t=h&z=20 This one is not that tall but wide and huge gnarly burly base. Spectacular architecture with twisting branches, some hollows and smaller burls, definitely an old tree but has weathered really well. Also the redeveloped park should benefit it with a decent large mulched garden and raised walkway. There's BBQ's and shelters, and a new playground for kids with wooden tree house/beach house theme. On points it beats the "Burl Tree" but totally different form, well worth seeing. Personally I still find the Burl Tree more fascinating but this tree is right here in town, well placed and cared for. An example of what should be done for aging trees. ![]() Common Name : Gum - Forest Red Scientific Name : Eucalyptus tereticornis Circumference : 8.325 metres (328 inches) (2.65m DBH) Height : 25.00 metres (82 feet) Crown : 30.00 metres (98 feet) 434pts A plover was sitting on 4 eggs, was aggressive and had a go at me, it's nesting on the ground as they do between the road and the base of the tree. I got my plastic rake out to do the stick trick test for height and one person thought I was going to whack the plover. Also only like 2m away from the plovers nest was the remains of a noisy myna that copped it I'd say from the plover. So perhaps soon there'll be little chicks parading around the park.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

So much character in that tree, just awesome. Answers a question for me too, that gnarly base is a feature in an older specimen that has done it tough. ![]() |

It's like a bunch of miniburls. Often this species can get a short sock, this ones gone burly.
