Default A BIG FIG at Wellington Point QLD.

Hi,
This wonderfull big fig is at 207 Main Rd Wellington Point QLD. I think it might be a Port Jackson Fig, and would like expert confirmation.

It is on an old waterfront farm property "Seaview". The "Our House" website says the house was built in 1864, and the tree is a Moreton Bay Fig of 300 years.

Seaview House

Could it be this old? or how old?

Look at the attached photos or Google Map (also go to streetview).
The diameter is approx 26 metres and height approx 22metres.

What a beauty!

Certainly looks like a very large tree.

The leaves, were they redish and hairy beneath?

The fruit, on short stalks? (less than say 10mm long)

We need the circumference at 1.4m above the ground

If it is a Port Jackson fig then it may well beat the NSW entry.

Are the owners approachable? If so, get some decent pics and accurate measurements. There some pointers for that on this link.

Eric,
The leaves are glossy dark green on top and matt finish paler green under. Fruit are short stalks 5-10mm long, and are 10mm diameter & green turning to yellow, orange then dark brown. The fruit bats have been (very noisily) eating them over the last month when the tree was full of green to orange fruit - but they stopped a week ago. Its hard to see the fruit now.
I cannot see any ariel roots & the leaves are smaller than a Moreton Bay Fig
I'll need to talk to the owners re measurements and registration.

Can you identify the species & age? maybe Ficus obliqua?

Cheers!
Ben

I cant from the pics.

If you go to the http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Redlands+Indigiscapes+centre&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=-27.547622,153.228335&spn=0.012614,0.033023&z=16 right near the entrance doorway is a large ficus obliqua you can compare to.

Now comparing a Port Jackson fig to a Moreton Bay fig, I really do not know of a decent example. Maybe take a piece with you to the Indigiscapes centre.
