Track repair work begins after derailment - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Track repair work begins after derailment

It could take more than a week for train services between Geelong and Warrnambool to be restored after a train derailed near Camperdown on Saturday.

The five carriage train had 75 people onboard when it hit a tree that was lying across the tracks.

Three people were treated in hospital for minor injuries.

V/Line spokesman Daniel Moloney says it could be more than a week before the track is repaired.

"The access all around is very difficult, we might actually need to go through a neighbouring property to build basically a brand new road to get through," he said.

Buses will run between Geelong and Warrnambool until services are restored.

Warrnambool Mayor Michael Neoh says the disruption could affect the city's tourism industry.

"Obviously we're in the middle of a whale tourist season, so the rail is very important for us," he said.

He says extra freight trucks will be forced onto the region's roads.

"We would hope that the line would get back to full operation as soon as possible to limit the impact of having freight go on the Princes Highway."

Public Transport Safety Victoria is investigating the derailment.

Thats one huge fkn chunk of tree on the tracks there. Bloody lucky that only 3 people were injured and not a complete derailment.

Wow. It could have been a lot worse, and had a few more injuries, or even deaths. Bruce.

I have another couple of trees to drop here that are leaning the wrong way right beside the railway line.
We've dropped two already, they are old dead Box and Red Gums which I sure don't want falling the wrong way.

Just get the train time table and make sure you clean it up before the train comes!

Bad news if it's an electric train though.

Nope, no electric for several hundred clicks, otherwise I'd be really peaking

It used to only be two trains a day, but seeing as there are now lots of coal trains these days we've been tempted to do our little bit for climate change
