A Green party councillor has died in what appears to be a tragic accident after falling out of a tree.

Phil Gordon, who represented the party on Leicester City Council, died on Tuesday.

A book of condolence was opened for him yesterday (May 12) at the council's city centre offices in Welford Place, Leicester.

Speaking from Westminster during her first day as Britain's first Green MP, party leader Caroline Lucas said: "This is very sad news.

"On behalf of the whole of the Green Party I'd like to send our condolences, our sympathies and our good wishes to Phil's family, friends and colleagues."

Former Green councillor in Leicester, Matt Follett, and current member of the party's national executive, said: "Phil was not just a colleague, but a real friend.

"He was one of the nicest men I've ever met, not just in politics but in wider life. He was one of the few people I knew who got on with everybody.

"He was an inspiration in how he conducted himself in his public role and was very proud to serve his ward. It's very sad for his family, and for us all."

Only good news is he may have died loved what he was doing and not had a heart attach from the stress of his desk job. R.I.P Phil
