Nine 12 year old kids all on one pine tree branch 10m up, branch splits out and they all rode it to the ground, fractures and broken bones....

Nine children hurt in tree fall - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Quote:
Nine children have suffered broken bones and fractures after a group of 12 fell 10 metres from a tree in southern Tasmania.

The group was playing in a pine tree at Conningham late yesterday afternoon when the branch snapped.

The children, all aged 12, were taken to hospital with suspected ankle and wrist fractures.

One child broke a leg.

Paramedic Peter Berry says it appears the children rode the branch to the ground.

He says it could have been much worse.

"The tree has been an older pine tree. The children appear to have been about 10 metres up into the tree and on a branch when the branch has actually split away from the tree and fallen to the ground and it appears the children have actually ridden the branch to the ground."

"[They are] all pretty good under the circumstances and none of the children appear to be critically injured which is good.

"The family were there being supportive and helping our crews as well, but the children performed really well."

THREE children remain in hospital today with broken backs after they plunged 10m from a tree when a branch they were sitting on with six other 12-year-olds broke at Coningham yesterday.

Twelve children in total fell shortly before 5pm -- the children were sitting on a branch of a very large pine tree.

Six ambulances were sent to the private home in Coningham Rd, Coningham, 30 minutes south of Hobart.

The scene this morning revealed a rope ladder up the side of the 30m tree.

The injuries were not life threatening. Police said three children suffered neck and back injuries -- one child had a broken leg and the other five children had suspected broken ankles and wrists.

The Royal Hobart Hospital said today that three children remained in hospital with spinal fractures and others had been released.

An operator at the State Ambulance Service said the children had been "very lucky" not to have suffered more serious injuries from the fall

Normally I would say that kids playing in trees are likely to have some sort of injury...

....But who the hell put up the rope ladder?

Kids will be kids ! I remember jamming my foot into the spokes on my push bike when I was a kid cause I thought it would act as a brake....well it did, up over the handle bars I went....didn't do that again!!! kids see the threat but fail to act on their foresight...some survive, like me, and these twelve children. Never again did I jamb my foot into the spokes and I think these kiddies will not climb a tree again with out thinking about how they can make themselves safe!!

Thats a big tree to leave a rope ladder on with billy lids around, glad to hear none to badly broken.
Sadly now mum n dad may keep the kids inside much safer watchin TV.. hmm nope its not.

Young children and TV tip-over injuries and deaths 2/07 - Child safety, head injury, closed head injury, head injury foundation, head injury in children, child head injury protection

That big new television you've just purchased could pose a real danger to your child. In the first seven months of 2006 alone, 10 children died after a TV fell on them, twice the typical yearly average, prompting the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue a warning to parents.

Been using this stat to defend or combat the old and much used, Its not a safe tree its gonna fall on the kiddies argument.
