Default stumpgrinding asbestos

Hi everybody,

Would you say it's a no brainer to walk from a stump grinding job where there is asbestos contamination. The homeowner enlightened me to this fact after I gave a quote, he has offered to remove it all before i start work however I can't be confident he will get every piece as the soil is disturbed and there would be small buried pieces under the surface. At the site there is no visual distinction between what is soil or what is tree material-it has been ground in the past but not deep enough so now they want it levelled. Whats your feedback?

Is there a requirement in NSW for licensed operators to work with Asbestos?

If I were doing it I'd think about working under direction of a licensed asbestos removal contractor, to protect my butt. Makes it heaps dearer for the client but I place a lot more weight on running a compliant operation pursuing best practice where suitable and/or convenient.

you are not permitted to work on it by law. (assume work is performed with a stump grinder)

I would be looking at getting an excavator in for stump removal.

two good methods of managing the hazard by Robstar and Redmower, however all it takes is one microscopic fibre to get into your lungs and you will pay the ultimate price... yes you can minimise the hazard but you can not eliminate risk, is a couple of hundred bucks worth your health?

Thats true Jeff, but as someone who has been trained in the handling of asbestos todays best practice's manages the risks sucessfully. I believe that both redmower and robstars combined posts is the best method of removal. Contract it out to a registered removalist who will remove it with a digger, dispose of the stump correctly and any and all contaminated soil.

As for grinding Risk for reward???? Nah.

Regards

Tony

Thanks for the feedback everybody, to grind that stump would expose others to risk also. I was not concerned about losing the income so much as letting down the client (coworkers relative).

I would get either a licensed remover, or just let it rot.
