PCBs levels are high in the fish in the SF Bay. Also high levels of a cousin to PCBs, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), which is a flame retardant and a neurotoxin. They and PCBs are known as persistant bioaccumulative toxins (PBT). The fish that eat the smaller fish wind up with more toxins, and the birds that eat them wind up with the toxins, and the women that eat the fish pass it to their kids through breast milk. Mercury and dioxin are also a problem, just as they are in the Great Lakes.

I used to fish for sturgen off of Angle Island in San Pablo Bay, the north half of the SF Bay. Anything I caught I tossed back, or I gave to my Korean friends that ate them raw with their family. I only only eat ocean caught fish, which is bad enough for some elements like mercury.

petrol sniffing is a big problem up in the kimberleys,halls creek(locally known as hells crack) especially bad.
we are also on alcohol restrictions.most of the problems with the indiginous population stems from the fact they think its their god given right to collect money for nothing and not work for a crust,consquentally all they seem to do is fight,breed and bash everyone else.its an endless viscious cycle and till they get off their arse's and do meaningful work its only going to get worse.
you would not believe the amount of people young kids included who roam arould the town all day and bloody night do f all except creating endless trouble

I saw them ripping apart there houses and fires in yards.

They fued with their own, shops were like animal cages in a 1960's zoo all barred up.

Hmmmm, for a minute there I though that you were from Washington State (WA is the postal abbreviation for WAshington, as well as West Oz). You could just as easilly be talking about some Indian Reservation in the states though. The Abo towns there sound a lot like the Indian Reservations here. They never show that stuff here either. The Reservations are restricted (even though segregation here was "supposedly' outlawed in the 1960s). Now they have these Indian Casinos all over the place. Indian Reservations are not restricted to state laws, so they sell untaxed cigarettes, booze and other stuff there. They also have legal casinos. There are dozens of them now up and down the coast. Alchohol has always been a problem with the American Indians, and they used to call it 'fire water' here when I was a kid. Oregon is the last state to have had an Indian War in the states. It was in the 1930's when there was an Indian uprising.

Of course the Reservations are not as bad as many of the inner cities. Last time I was in New York City and Brooklyn, New York, it was a mad house. What used to be called 'Little Norway' is just a part of 'BIG Puerto Rico' now. They all speak Spanish. There was a truck in the middle of the street of what was my grandmother's Brownstone house, half burned and half parted out. The liquor store there had bullet proof glass 5 inches thick, and a 2-way drawer that you put the money into, and they slid the booze in back at you in the drawer with your change. Bars on windows were the rule. Unless they were boarded up. That was better than New Jersey, where most of the buildings were "vacant." They were abandoned by the owners for back property taxes owed. The streets and buildings were ruled by gangs, and the buildings were called 'shooting galleries' for the junkies to get high on crack, crank, heroin, huffing, or whatever.

At the start of this year, myself and my groundie a kiwi named mooks were doing a rear yard takedown of a large euc.end of the day the chip truck is chockas with mulch (10 cubes) and there is no room for the rounds. We get on the mobile and tell the bossman we are heavy and will need to swing back in the morning to collect to timber.no probs says the bossman we can do it on the way to the days jobs which are further out and he will grind out the stump while we pound the pounds into the truck (RG 90/hungry hungry hippo!).
get on site and there we are boss out back us out front loading up.
bout halfway through our morning warmup and this crackie from up a side street from the site comes running across the main road and starts screaming at us to stop what we are doing because we are making too much noise and we made too much noise all of the day before and she cant sleep because of it(more likely cause she's on a meth binge and now is coming down bad).
I tell he poilte but firm that we are nearly finished and are just trying to earn a honest living doing hard yards how about you go away and let us get on with it ,

get back with another load and as we are about to chuck em in, back shes comes across the main road screaming like a banshee with a hockey stick above her head coming straight for us.At this point I am steaming cause NO-ONE threatens to kill either me or my workmates. but Mooks is telling me to calm down it isnt worth the effort so when she comes back for more I am no longer in The mood for this shit.She takes a swing at me round still in my arms but cant get a good sweep between the truck and chipper so its a easy dodge same as the second go, look her dead in the eye at tell her if she trys it agian I aint going to hit her (thats how I was raised)
but I will drop this dirty great piece of wood on her delicate bare feet without another thought. Then she realises that me and Mooks have had enough and runs aways screaming you c##ts are dead cause she knows people and they'll find us. I am laughing at how she couldnt even touch me with a big ole round in me arms yet want to go over and continue this some more when the cops cruise past, beauty the timings just grand, hail down the boys in blue at tell them go get that bitch etc. away they race and before we know it 4 squad cars roll up disgorge 10 officers who done flak jackets and pick up siege ladders and ramming bars from their car boots, (hello this really starting to get good).Me and Mooks stop working to watch while the bossman has finally finished and we clue him in on proceedings so far.Crackie is dragged out kicking and screaming blue murder into waiting divy van and its see you later.
Officer rolls over for at chat and tell him dont want to press charges but she needs some quiet time with some medical staff. laughs then tells us she was on the port adelaide morning briefing as one of the top ten wanted that day.
Oh the sweet irony of karma coming to bite the ass of those deserving it most.Bossman shrugs and laughs par for course and we go back to loading the rest of the rounds. later driving away Mooks tells me people owe him favours and for a couple of grand she could disapper real quiet like. still not sure if he is serious.

It seems the most trouble is always in the poorer neighborhoods. That is probably an indication of how little they get out of the city and enjoy a real forest. I was working in the worst area of town and noticed three 12 year old girls huddled by my branch trailer. I headed straight there, I think they were planning some kind of vandalism. So I said hi, and they asked why I was killing nature. One of the trees was the ugliest I'd seen, it had been hit by lightning twice and the other was in decline, poor species with six overhead lines through it. Both ligit removals. So I told them trees live in the forest and this is where people live and these trees need to be managed. Our real deforestation occurs due to development and population growth so coming from a 10 member 10 father family is really not helping. I suggested they should of been protesting at the pulp mill's gates while they were clear cutting and road building to supply their disposable diapers. The moral of the story is when working the bad areas you may need extra staff to deal with security.
