Man killed by falling palm tree - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Quote:
Northern Territory Police are preparing a file for the coroner after a Darwin man was killed by a falling palm tree.

Police say the man was lopping a foxtail palm at his property at Knuckey Lagoon on Friday afternoon.

Duty Superintendent Daniel Sheen says the trunk fell the wrong way and landed on top of the man.

"It occurred on Friday between 2pm and 5.15pm," he said.

"A 50-year-old Knuckey Lagoon male has died as a result of a foxtail palm falling on him while he was lopping his tree, doing the gardening in the yard.

"A tragic accident and police are now preparing a file for the coroner."
Chainsaw trainer warns of tree lopping dangers - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Quote:
A chainsaw safety instructor in Darwin says people should not cut trees down without proper training.

A 50-year-old man was crushed to death while lopping a foxtail palm at his property at Knuckey Lagoon last week.

Colin Meares trains people on how to use chainsaws in Darwin.

He says people should always seek professional advice before cutting large trees.

"For every training course that I run with half a dozen people there's always someone in that group who has got a near miss story that they like to tell us," he said.

"They all vary from almost cutting their foot off, or their leg off or someone losing a finger to falling trees onto parts of their houses."

Thats a tragic story and i like all of us wonder how he has fallen a tree onto himself but feel very sorry for the grieving family.
I fully agree with the training provider and i personally think that to own a chainsaw you should have passed a recognised course, no grandfather rights as the older people are the worst at cutting things off, and a re-test every ten years that would sort the wheat from the chaff and give the retiring arbs a job for life.
also it would clear out the idiots in the system that we all know exist.
