How sad is this.

Paramedic David Pardoe said the driver died instantly.

‘‘The car looked like it had . . . impacted the tree and had most of the roof line squashed and finished about 50 metres on the other side of the tree,’’ said Mr Pardoe.

‘‘The damage was mostly from the bonnet upwards . . . Unfortunately, the gentleman had extensive injuries and was deceased.’’

An hour later, a woman aged about 70 was lucky to escape injury when her car hit a fallen at an intersection in Coldstream, about 40 kilometres east of the city.
