Exclamation DIY stump removal kills father of 2

Basically Alastair Green put a circular saw blade on an angle grinder to grind down a stump. Spinning way to fast and little PPE when contact was made with the stump ....

Quote:
It was spinning at a "frightening" speed of 100 revolutions a second and which probably resulted in a "massive kick-back" on impact with the wood, the inquest heard.

The hearing was told this may have resulted in Mr Green, of Market Harborough, losing control of the tool.

Assistant deputy coroner Martin Gotheridge said the left hand side of his neck was "totally cut away" in the accident. Joanne Green, his partner of almost two years, had seen him using a chainsaw on the morning of the accident on December 19, 2007.

You want to feel bad for a guy like that but his own stupidity caused his demise. This is a great example of not knowing the limitations of the tools you're using and not understanding the potential ramifications of your actions.

BTW like the new forum.

Sad to hear about it. It happens a lot when someone tries to use a tool with something that they shouldn't be using. Sad for the family. Bruce. P.S. I too like the New Forum. Thanks Ekka for taking the time to build it.

Alistair was a good friend of mine for many years.

He was one of the nicest people you could hope to meet and not one to take risks usually.

I think it just serves to remind everyone to be careful and think safety first EVERY time. I know it's all too easy to run a risk...lean too far from a ladder....use a dodgy extension lead....not properly guard equipment when doing it the safe way takes a lot longer, but Alistairs sad death proves to Everyone, just how important safety is in every aspect of life.

And yes....he was a total idiot for doing this and I'm sure wherever he is, he is getting ribbed mercillesly for it. RIP mate.

Mowburnt you're right.

We get complacent, used to things, get some great ideas to chase full of enthusiasm without thinking through the risks. The speed things happen with machinery allow little time for reflexes.

Sad story, I'm sure he's not alone in thinking about how to solve a stump problem with the tools around the shed.
