A Richmond man who suffered crushing injuries in a tree-cutting accident remained in critical condition Friday.

Brian Coates, owner of Pikes Peak Tree Trimming & Removal, was flown by helicopter Wednesday afternoon to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

A representative of the public relations department said his condition status was unchanged from Thursday.

Coates, 45, was hurt about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday when a tree of about 2 feet in diameter fell on him at a work site near 600 North West Fifth St.

A Pikes Peak employee and a couple other men who were working at businesses nearby rushed to help pull the tree of Coates, who sustained fractures and internal injuries.

Those wishing to send get-well messages can address them to: Patient Brian Coates, Miami Valley Hospital, One Wyoming St., Dayton, Ohio 45409-2793.

A fund has been set up at First Band Richmond to help Brian Coates and his family with medical costs.

Donations also are being accepted at Personal Touch, 905 E. Main St. in Richmond, a business owned by Coates’ sister, Sherry Love.

The Richmond man is undergoing his fifth surgery today at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, after being injured in a tree-cutting accident Wednesday.

He owns Pikes Peak Tree Trimming & Removal.

“They’ve told us he will be in ICU for at least two months and he might get back to work in a year …. if that,” Love said.

Coates is on a ventilator and is heavily sedated while fighting internal injuries to his kidneys, lungs, ribs, bladder and hips after being crushed by a falling tree that was up to 2 feet in diameter, Love said.

Donations may be made to the Brian Coates Benefit Fund, First Bank Richmond, 20 N. Ninth St., Richmond, IN 47374.
