Bovill man survives being pinned by tree

Associated Press - September 6, 2009 3:34 PM ET

BOVILL, Idaho (AP) - A Bovill man says quick thinking by his wife and neighbors saved his life after a tree pinned him in his back yard.

Bob Coates had cut down the spruce tree before it rolled downhill and pinned him recently. Coates says he had trouble breathing because of the pressure the tree put was putting on his neck, hips and abdomen.

His wife called 911 and his neighbors used car jacks to lift the tree high enough to keep Coates alive until medics arrived.

Coates was airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash. He had no broken bones but suffered substantial nerve damage that will require extensive physical therapy.

Have you ever had a tree go the opposite way, that you have planned it to go, or have missed judged a tree, of being heavier on one side or the other?
It does happen!!! Nobody is perfect. Bruce.

to tell ya the truth--only one. and that happended, only because it was starting to go where it was supposed to, and a sudden gust of wind started to push it just opposite. there was still enough hinge attached--so i went and grabbed the wedges, and as the wind would back off a bit--i just kept thunking them--it finally went where it was supposed to--that raised the adrenaline level a mite!!!! i guess im not anal about it---but read the tree, and what im going to do,before i do it--

Torqued and loaded trees on the ground, especially really spread crowned trees like say oaks, figs, albizias etc have a lot of movement on the ground. Sometimes you fell the tree and even though it's lying down it's still 20' tall.

Be careful and read the weight and tension well, have some wedges on you if your saw gets stuck or another saw to cut you out of a jam.

Be careful out there.
