A MAN has died when a tree fell on him in an apparent logging accident in Victoria.

The man was struck by the falling tree in the Otways this afternoon.

The 35-year-old was dead when paramedics arrived, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

WorkSafe said the man was working for a logging company when the incident happened.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman said it was the ninth workplace fatality in Victoria in just over three weeks.

Twenty-five people have died in workplace accidents in the state this year, compared with 23 in 2010.

The accident happened near Gellibrand in Victoria's southwest.

Logger crushed to death by tree near Gellibrand

Andrea Hamblin | December 15th, 2011

A LOGGER was crushed by a tree near Gellibrand yesterday, the ninth Victorian workplace death to occur in 24 days.

The man, aged 40, had just felled a tree when he was struck by another tree that had been clipped by a reversing bulldozer, police said. He died instantly.

The incident occured at a logging coupe on Colac-Lavers Hill Rd, about 2km south of Gellibrand.

Ambulance officers were called to the scene about 2pm.

The 25th workplace tragedy to occur this year comes just days after a 25-year-old Melbourne tradesman died when his van exploded in a suburban street.

Worksafe spokesman Michael Birt said most of the recent deaths had occurred while workers were performing routine duties.

He said so many deaths in the lead-up to Christmas was a grim reminder of the need for all workers and employers to make safety a top priority.

"Twenty-five families have lost someone for Christmas this year," he said.

"We've had 25 people who haven't made it home at the end of the day and many more who have been seriously injured who might not make it through, so those families will be going through hell."

Yesterday's death was the second to occur in the Geelong region in the last three weeks. Last month, father-of-four Barry Fulton died when he fell 15m from a cherry picker while tree trimming on private property in Lara.

"We are going through a particularly dark patch and all of these guys, because all of them have been men, have been doing routine tasks of their jobs," Mr Birt said.

"It's a dreadful time of year and to have so many deaths in such a short time, you just have to wonder what more can be done.

"The safety messages just don't seem to be getting through."

Mr Birt said the reason for yesterday's death was unclear. Worksafe inspectors were investigating the incident.
