Default What's this pretty Purple Flowering Tree ?

Hi all,

We have this tree at theback of our place and have noticed that in spring it flowers with pretty purple flowers..

Does anyone know what this tree is ?

Got one in the backyard but with white flowers, nice little tree. Won't get too much bigger than that.

They're very common in the United States. I'm not sure if they're common in Australia.

The flowers smell wonderful!

They're sort of an old-fashioned garden plant here - at least they are in Melbourne. I don't often see them in newer gardens. Never in landscaped housing development (estate) gardens. They don't grow quickly enough or flower quickly enough to be ready by the time the property is to be sold...
