Default What an unusual fruit or seed pod- help

Dear Forum members, came across this tree in an old derelict farm garden. The tree was a striking, spreading, with a dense canopy approximately 20 feet high and 10-15feet diameter with glossy alternate leaves and a most striking fruiting body, not sure if it is a seed pod or an immature fruit (see photo). Can anyone identify this for me?
